'Earwig and the Witch', the first 3D animated film from Studio Ghibli, is based on Diana Wynne Jones' last book published in 2011 of the same name. The movie will follow the journey of Earwig, a witch's daughter who was left by her mother at an orphanage for safekeeping when 12 witches were following her. When she is 10 years old, she gets adopted by Bella Yaga and the Mandrake. Once they arrive at Bella Yaga's residence, she reveals that she is a witch and all that she wants from Earwig is for her to be the witch's assistant who helps in potion-making, among other things.

It is while living with her that Earwig finds out the truth about her mother being a witch too, and with Thomas, the talking cat's help, Earwig embarks on an adventurous journey.
