‘True gentleman!’: Fans remember Prince Philip for ‘cool’ gesture to Royal Marines on last public engagement
Royal fans paid tribute to Prince Philip on the fifth anniversary of his final official engagement before retiring from public life. On August 2, 2017, Prince Philip made his final solo public appearance at a Royal Marine parade in the Buckingham Palace forecourt. Fans couldn't help but admire Philip's chivalry and refered to him as a ‘true gentleman’ after seeing old footage of him honoring the Marines. This last event had personal importance to the Duke of Edinburgh, who was a former Royal Navy officer.
According to Daily Mail, August 2, 2022 was the fifth anniversary of Prince Philip's final public appearance in 2017 parade before his passing in 2021. Joe Little, the managing editor of Majesty Magazine, honored Prince Phillip's final official engagement by posting a video of him during the parade on Twitter.

He tweeted, “Five years ago this afternoon I was a part of an increasingly bedraggled group of royal correspondents and photographers on the forecourt of Buckingham Palace to witness the 96-year-old Duke of Edinburgh’s final official engagement. The heavy rain bothered him not a jot. #Legend.”
The video showed Prince Philip removing his bowler hat out of respect for the Marines who were passing by. Then, a flood of royal admirers joined in with remarks praising Prince Philip as a ‘true gentleman’ and ‘wonderful man.’
One user wrote: “What a wonderful man he was!” “That is very cool of him."

Yet another user remarked, “Think a frail 96 old could have had a more comfortable time. Yet there he stood. Legend.” Prince Philip, who was 96 years old when he eventually resigned, took part in 22, 219 solo royal engagements during the course of his lifetime. In May 2017, the Duke of Edinburgh announced his retirement after his first royal engagement in 1952. Prince Philip died at the age of 99 in April 2021. His funeral was attended by just 30 mourners as it was in the height of the pandemic.

The Queen, who is aged 96, still participates in official events, but she has recently delegated many of her official responsibilities to other Royal Family members. Princess Charlotte participated in her first official engagement this week without her brothers. The seven-year-old Princess attended the Commonwealth Games with Kate Middleton and Prince William where she cheered on English swimming athlete Luke Turley.
