'Will cheer England on from afar': Dua Lipa debunks rumors that she will perform at FIFA World Cup 2022
SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA: The FIFA World Cup 2022 is almost here. On November 20, over 12 years after Qatar was granted hosting rights for the competition, the middle-eastern country will host the most prestigious football tournament in the world. There were rumors that Dua Lipa would perform at the opening ceremony of the event, however, the 'Levitating' singer has shut down all the speculation on Instagram.
Lipa is currently on her 10-month 'Future Nostalgia' tour, and she is in Australia, as per Yahoo. Taking to Instagram, she posted, “There is currently a lot of speculation that I will be performing at the opening ceremony of the world cup in Qatar. I will not be performing and nor have I ever been involved in any negotiation to perform. I will be cheering England on from afar and I look forward to visiting Qatar when it has fulfilled all the human rights pledges it made when it won the right to host the World Cup."

For the World Cup finals, Qatar constructed seven stadiums, a new airport, a metro system, a network of highways, and roughly 100 new hotels. Around the stadium that will host the championship game, a whole city has been built. According to the government of Qatar, 30,000 foreign workers were employed specifically to construct the stadiums. The majority are from the Philippines, Bangladesh, India and Nepal. Qatar has subsequently faced severe backlash from human rights groups for its deplorable treatment of the migrant labour force leading to several countries, including Norway, to boycott the tournament.
Fans of the London-based singer have taken to Twitter to voice their feelings on the announcement. “Im so glad she’s a humanitarian, nicki take some notes and stop being selfish,” said a user in support of Lipa's humanitarian concerns while also taking a dig at rapper, Nicki Minaj. Another called her out by flipping her take and wrote, “Racism and the lack of freedom that is happening to Muslims in the countries of Europe is not talked about by anyone or sad now when what our religion ordered us was applied in an Arab country, did you feel sad? And talk about freedom, where is the justice?!! Lol”'
