DOHA, QATAR: Fans think Drake has 'cursed' Lionel Messi after he placed a bet of $1M in favor of Argentina to beat France in the World Cup final. Argentina will face France on Sunday, December 18, in what will be Messi's last World Cup game of his glittering career. Fans all over the world are hoping he will raise the cup at the Lusail Stadium in Qatar, having missed out on the prestigious trophy in 2014, when Argentina lost 1-0 to Germany.

Meanwhile, Rapper Drake has built a negative reputation for being a bad-luck charm as he is not good at predicting sporting winners. In a video posted on social media with a friend, he said, "I’ll take Argentina, he’ll take France. That will be a vibe," which has led fans to believe that Argentina could be hampered by the dreaded 'Drake curse'. The 'Drake curse' was in effect at UFC 281 when Israel Adesanya suffered a shocking defeat to Alex Pereira after Drake placed a bet on the former. Drake also placed a bet on Charles Leclerc winning the Spanish Grand Prix earlier this year, only for the Ferrari driver to suffer an engine failure during the race.

Football fans on Twitter were quick to jump on what it could mean. A user shared Drake's video with the caption, "I swear to god if Argentina loses its Drake's fault." One fan tweeted, "Drake don put money ontop Argentina to win World Cup, congratulations to France in advance," while another one shared a quick reaction image with the text, "Drake: 'I will bet on Argentina for the World Cup final.' WTF." A fan appeared to have faith in Messi, "Messi will actually be the undebatable & undeniable goat if he breaks Drake’s curse and wins the world cup," while another said, "Damn I wanted Messi to win the World Cup but drake just said Argentina is going to win so you know what that means," followed by a string of heart-break emojis.

Earlier this week, Messi told Argentine newspaper Ole, "[I am] Very happy to be able to achieve this. Ending my World Cup journey by playing my last match in a final. Everything I experienced in this World Cup is something very exciting, what people experienced, how people in Argentina are enjoying it." When he was asked if he meant Sunday's match would be his final ever World Cup game, Messi clarified, "Yes, surely yes. There are many years for the next one and I don't think it will have me. And ending like this is the best."
