Apple TV+ is foraying into new territories with each passing day. The streaming service is set to bring the first Korean-language original series to its platform with ‘Dr. Brain’ later this year. The series is being helmed by the visionary filmmaker Kim Jee-Woon and will feature Lee Sun-Kyun in the lead role.

Jee-Woon is known for directing critically-acclaimed movies like ‘A Tale of Two Sisters’, ‘A Bittersweet Life’ and ‘I Saw The Devil’ in his illustrious career. On the other hand, Sun-Kyun recently appeared in Bong Joon-Ho’s Oscar-winning movie ‘Parasite’ in 2019.

The show is based on the highly popular Korean webtoon of the same and will revolve around a brain scientist who is obsessive in figuring out new technologies to access the consciousness and memories of the brain. However, his life completely changes when he is involved in a mysterious accident.

The show will join a growing slate of Apple Original international dramas hailing from global award-winning storytellers.

Release date

Apple TV+ is yet to announce an official release date for the series. However, it is reported that the show might be available on the streaming platform in the second half of 2021.

Plot

The official synopsis reads: “The show follows a brain scientist who is obsessive about figuring out new technologies to access the consciousness and memories of the brain. His life goes sideways when his family falls victim to a mysterious accident, and he uses his skills to access memories from his wife's brain to piece together the mystery of what actually happened to his family and why.”

Cast

As of now, Lee Sun-Kyun is the only announced cast member for the upcoming show.

Lee Sun-Kyun

Born on March 2, 1975, Sun-Kyun is a South Korean actor who is known for starring in a variety of TV shows and movies. He received a Best Actor award from the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria International Film Festival for his role in ‘Paju’. However, his moment of glory came in 2019 when he was cast in the blockbuster hit movie ‘Parasite’.

The movie turned out to be a gigantic success for him and Sun-Kyun was one of the actors nominated in the Best Acting Ensemble category at the Critics Choice Awards and Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG). The cast won the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture at the SAG Awards.

Creators

The series is directed and written by Kim Jee-Woon. The critically-acclaimed director has been nominated for various international awards and has directed many critically-acclaimed movies like ‘A Tale of Two Sisters’, ‘The Good, The Bad and The Weird’ and ‘I Saw The Devil’.

Jee-Woon also serves as executive producer alongside Samuel Yeunju Ha, Ham Jung Yeub, Daniel Han, Joy Jinsoo Lee, and Min Young Hong.
