Did tanking ratings force Trevor Noah out of 'The Daily Show'? Internet says goodbye to host after 7 years
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Trevor Noah is leaving ‘The Daily Show’ after seven years as host. Informing his exit, the 38-year-old told viewers on Thursday night, September 29, “I remember when we first started, so many people thought it was a crazy bet, I still think it was a crazy choice, this random African. What a journey it’s been. It’s been absolutely amazing.” While many fans were left surprised by the unexpected announcement, some viewers of the show were quick to criticize the host's performance and pointed out its consistently low ratings. However, the exact date of Noah's departure has not been confirmed and would not be “immediate,” according to Huffpost.
Trevor, who took over as host in 2015 after the exit of Jon Stewart, had been receiving low ratings ever since. According to Forbes' report in 2016, the Comedy Central show's viewership declined by 37 percent that year. Under Trevor, the show scored a 0.32 rating among adults 18 -49, with around 820,000 viewers, in stark contrast to Stewart's 2011-2012 season, when his nightly average was 1.7 million viewers. However, Trevor gained in ratings with the 2016 election of former President Donald Trump. On the other hand, the show was regularly nominated for the Emmys but lost to HBO’s 'Last Week Tonight with John Oliver' every year since Stewart's exit.

Many on the internet were convinced low ratings prompted Noah's exit. One wrote, "Trevor Noah is leaving the Daily Show after 7 years, 0 laughs and low ratings." Another said, "Saw him transform it for a new generation of viewers who are more at home on social media than they are cable outlets and broadcast networks.' TRANSLATION - The show had LOUSY ratings." Someone else noted, "It's illegal to talk about ratings? Used to be the standard talking point. This story only mentions "diversity." Performance is irrelevant, only diversity matters. Trevor Noah stunk for 7 straight years."

The trolling continued, with one saying, "Dude, your time was up after your first episode, as your consistently awful ratings prove. You're talentless and hateful; nobody will care that you're gone." Notably, a tweet shared a few months ago had shown the show's ratings and read, "Jon Stewart trashed his own legacy by going woke Trevor Noah is currently trashing 'The Daily Show' in the ratings."
