'Did she pick SOTY herself?' Jill Biden trolled after she presents Grammy to Bonnie Raitt
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: The 65th annual Grammys gala kicked off on Sunday, February 5, in Los Angeles with a powerful performance by reggaeton sensation Bad Bunny, while top nominee Beyonce shattered the all-time record for the most awards ever at the glitzy event. Amidst all the glitz and glamor, in a surprise that few viewers saw coming, Bonnie Raitt won the Song of the Year (SOTY) award over Beyonce, Adele, and Taylor Swift. Well, the fact that first lady Jill Biden was at hand to present the SOTY award also sparked a lot of reactions.
Biden was announced as one of the presenters by the Recording Academy on Wednesday, February 1. The First Lady of the United States walked onto the platform wearing a gleaming gold gown. Her floor-length custom Oscar de la Renta off-the shoulder gown, as per the designer, was “gold floral vine-embroidered dress with a sheer base, and long sleeves that were embellished with enormous flowering leaves made of glittering gold and black sequins. Her outfit was completed with gold drop earrings. The categories she introduced were Song of the Year and Best Song for Social Change.

Who were the winners of the award presented by Jill Biden?
Jill Biden presented the award to Iranian artist Shervin Hajipour for his song 'Baraye' under the category of Best Song for Social Change. The song has been labeled the anthem for Iran's protest movement, sparked by the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini. "This song became the anthem for the Mahsa Amini protests. A powerful and poetic call for freedom and women's rights," Biden said.
The other musician who received the award from the first lady was Raitt for 'Just Like That' under the category of Song of the Year. Interestingly, Raitt now boasts 13 Grammy awards.
How many first ladies have previously presented at Grammys?
Biden is not the only first lady to attend the Grammy Awards. The audiobook adaptation of Michelle Obama's best-selling memoir, 'Becoming', received a Grammy for best-spoken word album a year after she made a surprise cameo at the Grammy Awards for the show's opening portion in 2019. On the other hand, when Hillary Clinton was first lady, she received a Grammy for her book 'It Takes a Village' in 1997 for best-spoken word album, as reported by MSN.
'She got nothing to do'
The Internet, however, was not too pleased with the Grammys' choice of presenter nor the winner in the SOTY category. One person tweeted, "She really got nothing to do that they got her presenting the Grammys." Another said, "Did she pick SOTY herself or something bc i have never heard the song that won…" One viewer wrote: " Still confused as to why Jill Biden, the first lady of the united states, announced song of the year like?" While an upset social media user wrote: "The grammys can’t even take themselves seriously."
Few eagle-eyed users happened to focus on Taylor Swift's reaction as the camera caught her clapping once the audience gave a standing ovation to the first lady. One simply posted a screengrab of the singer's reaction along with the caption "I can relate."
