Did DMX and Aaliyah date? 'One in a Million' singer's mother says 'you and Baby Girl will meet again' in tribute
Among the celebrities sharing their heartfelt condolences for rapper DMX's death, the late singer Aaliyah's mother Diane Haughton has also shared a tribute reminiscing about his "heart of gold." Aaliyah, another Grammy-nominated artist like DMX, died in 2001 in a plane crash at the young age of 22. Just a year before, she and the rapper had famously co-starred in the movie 'Romeo Must Die', ever since sparking a friendship so tight, speculations surrounding their relationship status is, to this day, rife.
Born Earl Simmons, DMX passed away on April 9, 2021, after being on life support for a week from an alleged drug overdosed. While the decision to take him off life support was reportedly with his mother Arnett Simmons, another mother who suffered the loss of a child reflected how he and her "Baby Girl will meet again." “Earl, you had and still have a heart of gold,” Haughton wrote through her daughter's official Instagram page. “You and Baby Girl will meet again with all the beautiful people we have lost. Will never forget your kindness. NEVER! Blessing to your family! Eternally! – Aaliyah's Mom.”

Did DMX and Aaliyah date?
While Haughton's sentimental post doesn't confirm a potential romantic relationship between the two, this does come after DMX named his own daughter after Aaliyah. The rapper and the R&B singer's relationship dates back to their 2000 collaboration in the film 'Romeo Must Die', where they starred opposite each other, and released a single for the film’s soundtrack called 'Come Back in One Piece'. Ever since, although neither he nor anybody close to the couple ever confirmed their relationship, the rapper was never shy of professing his deep fondness for the singer, long after her tragic demise.
"She had a presence on TV that was incredible. It was sexy but kind of gangster," DMX had told Billboard in 2011, a decade after Aaliyah's death. "She was easy to talk to and down to earth. Aaliyah made you feel comfortable, with her and with yourself. That's one hell of a combination." Following her death, DMX had also appeared in a posthumous video for the track 'Miss You' which Aaliyah had initially recorded back in the fall of 1999. The video went on to also feature Missy Elliot and Static Major. The song opens with DMX saying, "Dearest, sweet Aaliyah. Have trouble accepting the fact that you're gone. So I won't. It'll be like we went for a while without seeing each other. But I can understand why God would've wanted you close to him. Because you truly were an angel on Earth. And in my own special way, I love you. I miss you.”
DMX's many tributes to Aaliyah, including daughter's name
Recounting to Billboard how he met Aaliyah, DMX had also said: "When I was on tour [Aaliyah] and Joel Silver came to my dressing room to see if I wanted to be a part of the movie. Most people would have their people call, but she came herself. I'm like, 'Is this a trick question? You have to ask me if I want to be in a movie with Aaliyah? Hell yeah.' We met up in Vancouver to [do] Romeo Must Die."
Aaliyah died on August 25, 2001, in a plane accident in the Bahamas. She was on a craft that was terribly overloaded and crashed right after takeoff, killing all nine on board. The pilot was later found with traces of cocaine and alcohol in his body, also not qualified to fly the aircraft he was handling. Ever since her death, DMX has paid multiple tributes in her honor, including naming one of his 15 children after her. In an interview with VLAD TV, DMX described the singer as an "angel" before showing a photo of one of his children and revealing to the camera: "This is Aaliyah, that’s how special she was to me." He then turns to the photo and says: "Know that you’re named after an angel."
