Demi Lovato reveals she wants to return to emo music with a 'bunch of sappy love songs'
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: The singer-songwriter, Demi Lovato (who uses she/they pronouns), revealed that she returned to the emo genre for her most recent album, 'Holy Fvck,' and she explained that she's unsure of what to write about for its follow-up because she's feeling so good right now.
Her relationship with Canadian indie rocker Jordan Lutes, who co-wrote several songs on 'Holy Fvck,' including 'Substance,' Happy Ending' and 'City of Angels,' and with whom she has been dating since last summer before confirming their relationship in August 2022, makes sense given her current inclination for uplifting romantic songs.

'In a really good place'
In a relationship with musician Lutes, Lovato, 30, said, "I definitely am in a really good place. I don't know what I'm going to write about on my next album because I'm so happy. It is a really good feeling, but I don't know what I'm going to do." She added that romance will likely play a role in the upcoming project: "Definitely a bunch of sappy love songs — for sure."
Lovato addressed their relation to the emo genre in other parts of the interview. They said, referring specifically to the sound for Holy Fvck, "I grew up listening to this music," telling the program. The musician added, "I wanted to go back to my roots, whether you're going through a depression or you're having fun with your friends, there's so many emotions that's in this music. I think that this generation is hungry for it."
Lovato clarified that emo music can express a range of emotions given the genre's frequent connotations with harsher tones and topics. She continued saying, "Whether it was angst, whether it's falling in love, sadness, I always made music to become an inspiration to other people while also doing what I love."
'Demi feels happy and fulfilled'
At the time, a source close to the pair said, "Demi feels happy and fulfilled right now. Life is good. [Jutes'] encouragement and respect have helped her immensely." As per the insider, the couple has "a lot in common," including their shared recovery struggles. Jutes celebrated 100 days of recovery in July, while Lovato has openly talked about her sobriety after a nearly fatal drug overdose in 2018.
