Demi Lovato, who came out as a non-binary in May 2021, has added new pronouns to her Instagram bio. The ‘Cool for the Summer’ hitmaker had last year revealed that she will be using ‘they/them’ as pronouns but the singer has now also added ‘she/her’ to her identity.

Demi Lovato explained to host Tamara Dhia on the Spout podcast about what led to the decision. The 29-year-old crooner revealed that recently she has been feeling more feminine and that’s why she decided to adopt ‘she/her’ again. Demi had actually added her pronouns back in April but it is now that she spoke about the change in depth. On the work front, Demi is all set to release her next album, ‘Holy F**k’ later this month.

‘For me, I'm such a fluid person’

Speaking to host Tamara Dhia on her podcast, Demi asserted, “I've actually adopted the pronouns of she/her again. For me, I'm such a fluid person that I felt like, especially last year, my energy was balanced in my masculine and feminine energy so that when I was faced with the choice of walking into a bathroom and it said 'women' and 'men,' I didn't feel like there was a bathroom for me because I didn't feel necessarily like a woman. I didn't feel like a man. I just felt like a human”, as reported by People magazine.

The pop singer shared, “That's what they/them is about for me. It's just about, like, feeling human at your core," further explaining, “Recently, I've been feeling more feminine, and so I've adopted she/ her again. But I think what's important is, like, nobody's perfect. Everyone messes up pronouns at some point, and especially when people are learning. It's just all about respect."

Demi Lovato first announced about her pronouns ‘they/them’ in May 2021 when she came out as non-binary after “doing some healing and some reflective work.” She on her podcast ‘4D With Demi Lovato’ had then shared, “I feel this best represents the fluidity I feel in my gender expression and allows me to feel most authentic and true to the person I both know I am and still am discovering.”

‘Demi Lovato did NOT say she is abandoning they/them as her pronouns’

Social media users rushed to Twitter as soon as they got to know about the changes. Many clarified that Demi might have adopted the ‘she/her’ pronouns’ again but that did not mean she abandoned the pronouns ‘they/them’. “For the record: Demi Lovato did NOT say she is abandoning they/them as her pronouns, she simply said she is adding she/her. Please listen to the entire clip. Media friends, it’s important to get this right”, said one user as another shared, “Demi Lovato is now "detransitioning", which for her means switching pronouns (again). Many kids she helped to misinform about transgenderism are not as lucky, and won't make it out without missing body parts.”

The next one tweeted, “Reminder that demi lovato is still non-binary, they just added she/her to they’re pronoun list, there’s nothing wrong with fluidity.” Another one stated, “Demi Lovato said she called herself non binary because she wanted to be seen as human instead of a woman, which is sad.” One user said, “PSA: Demi Lovato, just like anyone, has every right to adopt the pronouns of she/her again. Words carry weight. Pronouns evolve.” And, one concluded, “Y’all really need to leave @ddlovato alone. Demi has gone THROUGH it and if she is trying to find herself why the hell does it matter to you? I’m so happy to see her making music again and thriving.”
