Dave Chappelle has once again angered the trans community after claiming that the person who attacked him on-stage on Tuesday night, May 3, was a “trans man”. The comedian was performing for ‘Netflix Is A Joke Fest’ at Hollywood Bowl when someone ran towards the stage and tried to harm him. However, the suspect was detained on time by security as well as Jamie Foxx and Chris Brown who reportedly took immediate action.

After the incident, Chappelle continued with his set and went on to joke that “It was a trans man,” which has left many people furious online. He had attracted a lot of backlash last year too after reportedly making transphobic comments.

Calling out Chappelle on his recent comment, a user tweeted, “All these people leave out the fact Dave Chappelle joked that it was a “trans man” that ran on stage to beat him when we don’t know who it was. All we know is that things are about to get worse in this country and have been getting worse for trans people and Dave encourages it. I’ve continually said I don’t think attacking Dave Chappelle was okay. All I ask is for offhand comments regardless of intent to not punch down on vulnerable communities. This one happens to be one I belong to. I’m muting this thread because it’s late and nothing is gained here.”

Another user also took a dig at Brown, who in 2009 pled guilty to one count of felony assault after attacking his then-girlfriend Rihanna, and wrote, “I for one love that Dave Chappelle was tackled on stage at a show that had a special appearance by his friend and known misogynist and abuser Chris Brown. Even said it was a ‘trans man’ to much applause after. No word if they were, but his crew did break his arms. Comedy folks.”

The third user said, “Dave Chappelle response to being tackled on stage was ‘That was a trans man’ Like, that’s not even funny. And when I say it’s not funny I don’t mean it’s offensive I just mean that was a pretty s**t joke 🥴.” “Dave Chappelle got tackled tonight at his show and really f**kin said on the mic right after ‘it was a trans man’ Wow. Wow. Wow. F**kin wow,” the fourth one noted, while another added, “The guy whole tackled Dave Chappelle was in the wrong. But for Dave to go back on stage after 10+ people (including Chris Brown) stomped his ass, and joke that it was just a ‘trans man’ is so incredibly fucked.”

For his 2021 Netflix show, ‘The Closer’, the 48-year-old had said: “Every human being in this room, every human being on earth, had to pass through the legs of a woman to be on earth. That is a fact.” He had also made fun of trans women's genitalia, adding it’s “not quite what it is,” which resulted in retaliation. Initially, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos supported Chappelle, saying: “We have a strong belief that content on screen doesn't directly translate to real-world harm.”

However, later he told The HollyWood Reporter: “I want to make sure that everyone understands that we are deeply committed to supporting artistic freedom with the creators who work at Netflix. We’re deeply committed to increase representation on screen and behind the camera, and we’ll always learn and improve on how to address these challenges as they arrive.”
