Spoilers for 'Dark Forces'

Netflix's Spanish horror-thriller 'Dark Forces' unleashed all the dark on us with much force. Sorry, but after seeing a film like that, you do come up with such lines. The film revolves around the renegade criminal Franco (Tenoch Huerta) and his nightmarish stay at a hotel. At the outset itself, the hotel is eerie and frightening as junkie guests roam around, some of them play music in the next room till late, while others...are just well, plain demons. Even the plumber who comes to repair the water problem in Franco's washroom is rather freakish and warns him that the last time there was such a hindrance, it was due to a bunch of rats and they had to use acid.

Nevertheless, Franco is on a mission. He needs to find out where his sister Sonia is, and who is holding her hostage. There's the mafia involved, and a group of hitmen, organized by a man named Max. He has promised to protect her, and he must do it at all costs. However, while staying at the hotel, he is haunted by monsters throughout and they seem keen to infect him with the 'dark forces'. For a while, the distinction between reality and nightmares becomes blurred. He finds love in Rubi (Eréndira Ibarra), who says she just wants to start anew with life as she is trying to get away from the murkiness of the hotel. She's trapped as well as she's a sex slave to the man who is responsible for his sister's condition. She says that she has had a painful past and that a ghost embraces her every night and that she can't break free. Yet, she's learned how to survive.

Meanwhile, he discovers the book 'Fuego Negro' ('Dark Forces'), and the more he reads it, the more he sinks into the 'dark forces'. Yet, he finally manages to kill the demon that spits blood into him and buries him along with the book. However, he still contains the  'infection'. He also kills the demon who has sex with Rubi every night. She reveals to him that he needs to go to the warehouse 'south of the city', as that's where Max and the hitmen have held people captive. They bid goodbye and part ways.

He finds his sister, and the two have an emotional reunion. Just as he is about to leave, Rubi shows up and shoots him, as an actor of betrayal. She asks him why he never suspected her and how he couldn't 'smell' danger. He kisses her forcefully one last time, transferring the bloodied infection to her, killing her.

'Dark Forces' is currently streaming on Netflix.
