‘Sonic 4’ finally gets a release date as director teases Kristen Bell's character may lead the story
The action-adventure comedy film 'Sonic 4' is off to a running start, with its production underway and the casting of the fan-favorite character, Amy Rose. The film's director, Jeff Fowler, shared an exciting update about the latest installment in the 'Sonic the Hedgehog' film series on social media on March 2. In his Instagram post, Fowler is seen standing in the middle of a field, with his back facing the camera. He is holding a clapperboard in his right hand and Amy Rose's 'Piko Piko' hammer in the other, seemingly hinting that she will take center stage in the film. His back features the number "4," and he captioned the post, “Ready 4 Action. #SonicMovie4 now filming. In Theaters Worldwide March 2027." 'Sonic 4' is slated to release in theaters worldwide on March 19, 2027, and is distributed by Paramount Pictures.
'Nobody Wants This' actress Kristen Bell is set to voice the iconic pink hedgehog Amy Rose in the next installment of the franchise. The character is known for her positive nature and high energy, but can also sometimes have a temper. Fowler broke the news online as he shared a picture of himself posing with Bell. The caption read, "We Have Our Amy Rose!!! And I could not be more excited!!! Please welcome the incredible @kristenanniebell to the @sonicmovie family!!!" The last film, 'Sonic the Hedgehog 3,' teased the inclusion of Amy Rose and Metal Sonic in the post-credits scene, meaning that the next installment will likely be adapted from the video game, 'Sonic the Hedgehog CD.' It must be noted that the role of Metal Sonic has not been cast yet.
The 45-year-old actress will be joined by most of the cast from the last three films. Ben Schwartz will reprise his role as the titular Sonic, and Keanu Reeves will voice Shadow. The title will also feature Colleen O'Shaughnessey as Tails and Idris Elba as Knuckles, among others. Moreover, most of the live-action actors, including Jim Carrey as mad scientist Dr. Robotnik, James Marsden as Tom Wachowski, and Tika Sumpter as his wife Maddie Wachowski, are expected to return. Fowler, who helmed the first three movies, will direct the next film in the franchise as well.
The 'Sonic the Hedgehog' films are adapted from the video game series of the same name by the Japanese company Sega. The beloved franchise began with the release of 'Sonic the Hedgehog' in January 2020, and was followed by 'Sonic the Hedgehog 2' in March 2022 and 'Sonic the Hedgehog 3' in December 2024. The first three films have been a huge critical and commercial success, adding to the excitement for the fourth film.
