American singer and songwriter Christina Perri, 32, has revealed that she recently suffered a miscarriage.

In a heartbreaking message posted to the singer's Twitter on Friday, she said, “Today I had a miscarriage. Baby was 11 weeks old at the time. We are shocked & completely heartbroken.”

She and her husband Paul Costabile share a child together and the couple had yet to announce that they were expecting a second time.

They welcomed their daughter Carmella Stanley in January 2018, she will be two next week.

Telling her followers more about the sad moment, "We were only 1 week away from sharing the news so I feel like it’s also important to share this news too. I want to continue to help change the story & stigma around miscarriage, secrecy, and shame,” she stated.

Perri reached out to mothers who may have experienced the pain of losing a child, continuing, “I am so sad but not ashamed. I am ever reminded how amazing and powerful women are at making life and at healing. To all the mothers who have been here and who will be here, I see you and I love you. I am so sad but not discouraged. When the time feels right we will try again, but today, we mourn our little life lost.”

This is not the first time the 'Jar of Hearts' singer has been open about her struggles. She revealed to PEOPLE last year about her struggles with postpartum depression after the birth of Carmella. “That got me the hardest when I stopped breastfeeding around Christmas. I was so sad and so dark. We’re almost made to pretend it’s not happening, like, ‘It’s fine. I’ve got this,'" said Perry.

“What really helped was talking about it. It was just overwhelming. It made me feel so much better. All the women said ‘me too, me too, me too’ and really got me through it. I’ve got my mommy tribe that got bigger because of that," she continued. Perri had said that after she had shared her struggles, more than 15,000 mothers had reached out to her through social media.

Twitter support was strong after the singer posted the heartfelt message with many showing love. Musician Zach Matari said, "So sorry for your loss, love you guys. keeping you all in my prayers." Chelsea Briggs also sent her thoughts, tweeting, "I’m so sorry. Thinking about you guys. Sending all my love."
