Carrie Fisher to get Hollywood Walk of Fame star, fans say '40 years too late'
Hollywood icon Carrie Fisher will be one of the several celebrities to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2022. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce announced a list of celebrities that would receive the honor on June 17 but was slammed in response. Social media seemed furious that Fisher was being awarded the honor so late after she passed away in 2016.
A star on the Walk of Fame is one of the most coveted honors a celebrity can receive, but not in all cases. Back in 2018, vandals attacked Bill Cosby's star, writing the words "serial rapist" on it, shortly before he was sentenced for sexual abuse. During his presidency, Donald Trump's star too was a frequent target for vandals, so much so that the West Hollywood City Council called on the chamber to remove it entirely.

Fisher isn't the first celebrity to receive a posthumous star. In January 2018, the chamber awarded Australian wildlife crusader Steve Irwin with a star, 12 years after his tragic death. But while there was little backlash over Irwin's honor, it seems social media is furious that the chamber has been so late to recognize Fisher.
Who all are getting stars in 2022?
Fisher, who is best known for playing Princess Leia in the Star Wars films is one of the biggest names on the list, but far from the only one. She will be joined by Francis Ford Coppola, Macaulay Culkin, Willem Dafoe, Salma Hayek, James Hong, Helen Hunt, Michael B Jordan, Regina King, Ray Liotta, Ewan McGregor, Adam McKay, Jason Momoa, Tessa Thompson.
From the TV space, celebrities who will be honored in 2022 are Byron Allen, Greg Berlanti, Ricky Gervais, Peter Krause, Bob Odenkirk, Holly Robinson-Peete, Norman Reedus, Tracee Ellis Ross, Jean Smart, Ming-Na Wen, and Kenan Thompson. The chamber has also decided to include musical icons like Black Eyed Peas, George E. Clinton Jr., Ashanti Douglas, DJ Khaled, Avril Lavigne, Los Huracanes Del Norte, Martha Reeves, and Ermias “Nipsey Hussle” Asghedom. Like Fisher, Asghedom's star will too be posthumous since the rapper died in 2019 after a shooting in Los Angeles.
Patti Lupone, Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis, Jr., Angelica Vale, Richard Blade, and Michael Strahan close the long list of additions next year. Naturally, there was a lot of excitement around those names, but none drew the kind of controversy Fisher's name did.
Twitter 'stunned she didn't have one already'
One furious user asked, "I’m really happy Carrie Fisher is getting a star in the Walk of Fame, but I’ve got to ask… HOW THE F--- DID SHE NOT ALREADY HAVE ONE?!?!" Another user tweeted, "I just found out that Carrie Fisher is getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame which is cool, BUT SHE DIDN'T ALREADY HAVE ONE??? I thought she would've had one years ago."

Dates for the ceremonies have not yet been announced, as it will be up to the celebrities or their families to decide when they want to be honored. When they do decide, the chamber will update the Walk of Fame website. Since 1960, over 2,000 celebrities have been honored with a star, which has gone on to become a must-see attraction in Hollywood.
