Broadway star Nick Cordero's right leg amputated following COVID-19 complications
Broadway actor Nick Cordero who has been battling COVID-19 since late March will have to get his leg amputated due to complications from the virus, his wife Amanda Kloots has revealed.
Cordero, known for his portrayal of Earl in the Broadway hit 'Waitress', was diagnosed with coronavirus last month after displaying pneumonia-like symptoms. He was rushed to intensive care at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, California, where he tested positive for COVID-19 and was put in a medically induced coma to stabilize his breathing. Kloots has since been regularly updating fans about Cordero's condition and recovery.
He has been in the hospital for over two weeks now and while the Tony-nominated actor had been showing signs of recovery, his condition took a turn for the worse. Kloots took to her Instagram Stories on Thursday for the most recent update on Cordero's health.
The celebrity fitness instructor told fans that her husband was on a ventilator and his right leg had a blood flow issue that would require surgery. Blood-clots as a result of complications with internal organs and medication had formed in Cordero's right leg leading to difficulties in his blood reaching his toes. He was prescribed blood-thinners to combat the problem but the thinners caused other issues including internal bleeding in his intestines and drops in his blood pressure. He was immediately taken off of his medication and prepped for surgery.
Kloots said of the new development in her husband's condition, “The surgery went well. The doctor said for Nick’s heart and lungs right now, they’re in the best condition that they could be."
"The next hours coming up are very important because the heart and lungs are running on their own now for the first time in a couple of days," she added. The unfortunate news, however, was that Cordero still had the blood flow issue with his right leg, Kloots said.
"The doctor went in there, fixed as much as they possibly could to get blood flow down to his toes again. We don't know what the damage will be. We don't know if he will be able to walk again. We don't know if he can walk again, what that will look like." She also went on to add that the actor's schedule will be packed with rehabilitation sessions.
Kloots shared that her husband's leg would be amputated on April 18 at 6.45pm, and in a new video revealed that his surgery went well.
Anyone and everyone from broadway has been diligently praying for Cordero's safe recovery. Kloots has been encouraging her friends and fans to join and participate in daily dance parties at 6 pm ET / 3 pm PT to her husband's song 'Live Your Life' and trending the hashtag #WakeUpNick.
On April 18, actor and Tony-winning producer Alex Boniello shared a GoFundMe page set up to help pay for Cordero's medical bills and support Kloots and their 10-month-old son, Elvis.
