Bill Maher, host of 'Real Time,' claimed that Republicans would "secretly love" to see Trump imprisoned over January 6 in the same way that Arab nations 'liked when Israel would bomb Iraq. Sam Stein, the White House editor for 'Politico,' and John McWhorter, an associate professor at Columbia, joined Maher, 66, as he returned to his show on Friday night after a month.

On Friday's broadcast, he declared: "The other side is going to say: 'political,' but it couldn't possibly be all political, because all the witnesses and those prosecuting it are Republicans!" He continued by stating that US Attorney General Merrick Garland faces a "major decision" over whether to proceed with the trial and perhaps find Trump guilty of inciting the disturbance.

According to Maher, Trump has already demonstrated that there would be "subsequent attempts" because he has "already attempted" it, so he "thinks they should" take the matter to court. 'If you guys bring this [to court], you got to win the case. He's in jail,' Maher hypothesizes. 'My theory, the Republicans would secretly love it, I think they would f*****g love it. [The same] way Arab countries would love it when Israel bombed Iraq or Iran.'

Sam Stein, agreed with Maher that many Republicans "privately can't stand the guy. "He joked to Maher, who replied that Trump being imprisoned would be the same as "when he was off Twitter," "I don't know if they want him shackled, but they wouldn't totally be disappointed." According to a joke made by Stein, the former president had his own social media network called 'Truth Social' and would "have someone sends his truths for him." McWhorter asserted that Trump would continue to have the same number of supporters even if he were imprisoned.

'It would really change the way people felt about him and whether or not people voted for him if this came out exactly the way you were hoping," McWhorter said to the presenter. "Because this belief in him has become a kind of religion, it would not affect who would vote for him. Just the megalomaniacal views of Trump personally and craven individuals following him led to the events of January 6," McWhorter claimed.

Maher took to Twitter and posted a glimpse of his show where he said "I think Republicans would secretly love it if Trump went to jail."

Maher soon posted on Twitter, and comments poured in. One user responded: "Under the diplomatic immunity clause, Trump cannot be put in jail. Haven’t you ever read the Declaration of Independence?"

Another wrote: "Him being better or worse than any other president before or after him is irrelevant when compared to character. And his character is anything but virtuous. The fact that Christians back this man to this day baffles me."

Supporting Maher's statement, a user tweeted: "I think if he actually goes, they won't keep it a secret for long. They'll trip over themselves getting to the closest camera to tell everyone how they knew he was wrong for America for a while."

Another user criticized Maher and wrote: "Republicans openly love it that you can’t stop talking about Trump."

A user wrote: "I agree because he makes politics a bigger joke than it already was, the kind of joke that nobody really laughs at except the person who made it. Plus living in Texas has shown me that politics can become cult-like, and the only thing that scares me more than politics is fanatics."

Another user quipped: "He’s talking about the other Republican politicians, you know the ones who trashed trump then flipped as soon as their base began worshiping him. I agree with him, the MAGA crowd would be irate and the campaign to Free Trump would be an easy road to victor."

Twitter users' have had a range of responses, with some criticising Maher's statements while others rejecting his hypotheses.
