'Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F' Review: Eddie Murphy gives us a dose of nostalgia, but little else
BEVERLY HILLS, CALIFORNIA: In recent times, we have been witnessing a surge in Hollywood's attempts at reviving old franchises to further encash the success of the original films.
'Beverly Hills Cop' has joined the bandwagon with the release of its fourth installment, thirty years after its last film.
'Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F' marks the return of Eddie Murphy in his iconic role of Axel Foley. The Detroit Police Lieutenant is back in Beverly Hills when he discovers that his estranged daughter's life is under threat.
This time, he isn't just a street-smart cop trying to solve crimes. Instead, there's a personal stake in the game and he has to carefully crack the case while ensuring his daughter's safety.
'Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F' is an honest attempt at reviving the franchise
Mark Molley, in his first attempt at direction, has done a fantastic job at capturing the true essence of the popular franchise.
He vividly captures the lively atmosphere of Beverly Hills and balances the roots of the franchise while infusing his own vision.
Though there's an overuse of old references and catchphrases to bring the nostalgia but writer Will Beall balances it by bringing fresh humour, particularly through Axel's comedic misadventures.
This film could be many things, but a thriller isn't one of them. The case they are following is barely a mystery. You know the culprit right from the beginning and so do the protagonists. You also very well know how the film is going to end.
So, the films solely rely on comic adventures and silly action chases. It is, in fact, a relief from the recent films that introduce thrill at every possible step.
The lack of complexity is a refreshing flavor where we can just grab our popcorn and enjoy a silly comedy, just like in old times.
It's also refreshing to hear the iconic theme song that once ruled our hearts and topped the charts around the globe.
Eddie Murphy is the soul of 'Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F'
Eddie Murphy is as compelling in his role as he was three decades ago. His classic one-liners and perfect comic timing are the essence of the film. Yes, there are dull moments when certain jokes fall flat but Murphy's on-screen persona balances it out.
We are happy that he didn't try to copy his younger self to please the audience. Three decades have passed since we last saw him as Axel. And thankfully, he has embraced the time gone by. He is not just a smart and adventurous cop anymore. He is a father who wants to resolve differences with his grown-up daughter.
There's a pinch of emotional depth to his character and he embraces it perfectly. However, there was still room to have a better exploration of the issues between the father-daughter duo.
Furthermore, it's a delight to see the reunion of cast members. Judge Reinhold and John Ashton bring their signature comedic style to Billy Rosewood and John Taggart.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt provides a solid foil for Murphy as the straight-laced Detective Abbott. Taylour Paige as Jane Saunders is convincing in her role.
'Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F' thrives on the nostalgia factor with the same location, same cast, and same level of energy. If you can ignore the predictability factor and want to enjoy a simple action comedy, this film is made for you!
'Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F' is available to stream on Netflix.
