The BET Awards 2022 also saw some celebrities use the stage to slam the recent controversial overturning of Roe v Wade which protected the right to abortion in every state. Actress and host Taraji P Henson led that charge during her opening monologue at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. The 51-year-old slammed the decision, calling it a "sad day" — a sentiment that was echoed by other actors and actresses as well.

In the US, almost half of the states are expected to restrict abortion as a result of the decision that comes in the wake of constricting abortion law in Mississippi. According to a CNBC report, Justice Samuel Alito wrote, "We hold that Roe and Casey must be overruled." The justice added, "The Constitution makes no reference to abortion, and no such right is implicitly protected by any constitutional provision, including the one on which the defenders of Roe and Casey now chiefly rely — the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment."

Sharing her thoughts on the decision, Henson called for the people to step into their power. "It's about time we talk about the fact that guns have more rights than a woman," she remarked. "It's a sad day in America. A weapon that can take lives has more power than a woman who can give life if she chooses to," she opined. "It's about time I got that off my chest." As per a People report, singer Janelle Monae was a bit explicit and said, "F*** the Supreme Court" and received a rousing response from the audience. The site reported that these celebs now join the likes of Olivia Rodrigo and Megan Thee Stallion who have voiced their opinions on the decision.

That said, there were rather contrasting replies to it by fans on Twitter who in turn slammed the awards show. "And now fewer people watch that awards show a good job," one of the fans wrote. "They are losing their minds. That happens when the Constitution is defended," another replied. "More political crap in an entertainment award show. Not even worth touching the converter for," a tweet read.
