Anne Hathaway tells Greta Thunberg to 'stay strong' as celebs voice their support for the climate activist
A horde of celebrities have come out in support of Greta Thunberg. Top of the list is Anna Hathaway who has told Greta to "stay strong".
The actress showed her support for the Swedish climate activist after the teenager delivered a passionate speech at the United Nations on Monday, September 23, according to a USA Today report.
The 16-year-old with Asperger syndrome has been criticized by various personalities right of the political aisle, including Fox News' Laura Ingraham, who likened her to "Children of the Corn".
"Dear @gretathunberg," Hathaway wrote on Instagram on Tuesday, September 24, "Please know that under every bridge that has ever been built there has also been a troll that comes with it – sometimes more than one. The bridge – meaning that which connects and elevates – is more important than the troll."
Thunberg took to Twitter on Wednesday, September 25, to bemoan how her critics have attacked everything from "my looks, my clothes, my behavior, and my differences."
Hathaway, however, told the teenager to "keep going" and "stay strong", concluding "With all my gratitude and support, Annie." When the actress faced a backlash from her critics, she told them to "leave this space immediately".
"Note: We don’t bully children here. If anyone feels the need to insult Greta — or anyone — for caring about the future of the planet, please leave this space immediately and consider seeking help," she wrote. "Your violence is not healthy and it is not welcome."
Thunberg received words of encouragement from several other celebrities as well. The climate activist's emotional speech was reposted on social media by the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Chris Hemsworth, Camila Cabello, Joe Jonas, Cara Delevingne and Ellie Goulding.
"How dare we fail you... and what audacity we have to not want to help you save what's left," actress Priyanka Chopra wrote.
"Thank you @gretathunberg for giving us the much-needed punch in the face, for bringing your generation together and showing us that we need to know better, do more to save what is most critical. At the end of the day, we only have this one planet."
Penélope Cruz, meanwhile, said, "Bravo!" while actor Mark Ruffalo shared, "Take the time to read this and spread @gretathunberg’s words. #ClimateStrike #FridaysForFuture."
Trump critic Chrissy Teigen tweeted lyrics from Whitney Houston's 'Greatest Love of All', writing, "Teach them well and let them lead the way." Teigen also mocked Trump by adding his description of Thunberg in her Twitter bio, which reads, "A very happy young girl looking forward to a bright and wonderful future."
'Game of Thrones" star Lena Headey, meanwhile, urged her followers to "LISTEN" to the teenager. "That this cannot even wake the darkest hearts is so painful," she wrote on Instagram.
