Greta Thunberg shuts down haters trying to shift focus from climate talks: 'Don't give them any more attention'
Activist Greta Thunberg broke the internet with her passionate speech at the United Nations Climate Action Summit, scolding some of the biggest world leaders for not doing enough to stop climate change.
That speech, however, also drew its share of criticism. On Wednesday, September 25, the 16-year-old took on her haters, accusing them of distracting people from the environmental crisis plaguing the world today.
"Here we go again... As you may have noticed, the haters are as active as ever — going after me, my looks, my clothes, my behavior, and my differences. They come up with every thinkable lie and conspiracy theory," she wrote in a string of tweets on Wednesday.
"It seems they will cross every possible line to avert the focus since they are so desperate not to talk about the climate and ecological crisis. Being different is not an illness and the current, best available science is not opinions — it's facts," Greta shared.
She added: "I honestly don't understand why adults would choose to spend their time mocking and threatening teenagers and children for promoting science when they could do something good instead."
Greta summed up: "I guess they must simply feel so threatened by us. But don't waste your time giving them any more attention. The world is waking up. Change is coming whether they like it or not. See you in the streets this Friday!"
At the end of the last tweet on her thread, she included the hashtag "aspiepower" which likely referenced Asperger's syndrome, a condition she suffers from and also something she has called her "superpower" from which she derives her fierce nature.
One of the people who mocked her tearful speech was, obviously, Donald Trump, who tweeted, "She seems like a very happy young girl looking forward to a bright and wonderful future. So nice to see!"
Choosing not to enter into a social media feud with the POTUS, Thunberg took a witty route and adopted the president's tweet into her Twitter bio, which after Trump's tweet, read, "@GretaThunberg A very happy young girl looking forward to a bright and wonderful future."
