'Devastating parental earthquake': Tributes pour in as Andrew Lloyd Webber’s son Nicholas dies of 'ghastly' pneumonia at 43

Andrew Lloyd informed his fans that Nicholas was battling with pneumonia which he got as a result of his cancer

LONDON, ENGLAND: Nicholas Lloyd Webber, 43, who was ‘Bad Cinderella’ composer Andrew Lloyd Webber’s eldest son and a Grammy-nominated musician, has died on March 25, 2023.

Nicholas’s father, Andrew Lloyd Webber, 75, took to his social media accounts to share with his fans and followers the news of his firstborn’s death. “I am shattered to have to announce that my beloved elder son Nick died a few hours ago in Basingstoke Hospital.” Andrew also added, “His whole family is gathered together and we are all totally bereft.”

On Thursday, Andrew took to Instagram to post a video to thank all the fans who supported him during the difficult time. “We’re all here, and the family here has gathered around, and it was the right place for us all to be I think,” said the ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ composer. He started the video by thanking his audience for the “huge outpouring” of love and support for his son.

Nicholas Lloyd Webber - An artist gone too soon

Nicholas was born on July 2, 1979, to Andrew Lloyd Webber and his first wife Sarah Hugill. The musician and record producer was known for composing the score of the BBC One drama ‘Love, Lies and Records’, the musical ‘Fat Friends the Musical’ and ‘The Last Bus’. Nicholas also worked with his father in ‘Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cinderella’ for which he was nominated for the Grammy Awards in 2022 alongside Andrew, producer Greg Wells, and another composer and lyricist David Zippel. In June 2018, he married viola player Polly Wiltshire.

Nicholas suffered from gastric cancer which he battled for 18 months. Earlier this week, he was shifted to “hospice care.” In Thursday’s video, Andrew Lloyd informed his fans that Nicholas was battling with pneumonia which he got as a result of his cancer. To stay beside his son during his critical moments, the veteran music composer chose not to attend the opening of his Broadway musical 'Bad Cinderella' at the Imperial Theatre on Thursday. He also addressed this in the video by thanking the team and wishing them luck.

'Truly devastating'

Condolences poured in as the news of Nicholas's death came to the fore. "Our whole family mourns with you, Andrew. Sending you love and peace," writes Lin-Manuel Miranda. Nicole Scherzinger says, "My heart breaks for you and your family. I am so so sorry Andrew. Sending my love and prayers." Merck Mercuriadis says, "Sending you and your family love and light Andrew." Carrie Hope Fletcher exclaims, "Such awful news. So so sorry. Sending love to you and your family." Dame Arlene Phillips says, "My heart goes out to each and everyone of the family at this sad news . No parents should have their child die before them. Andrew and Sarah I am heartbroken for you and for all his loved ones."

Posts flooded the Twitter thread as well. "This devastating parental earthquake cannot be softened by anything anyone can say. But our thoughts, prayers, visualisations, wishes and empathy may be some sort of support for you and his beautiful spirit," writes Eva Pope. Guy Johnston says, "Heartbroken for you and my cousin, Polly and little Gus. You are all in our thoughts. Sending much Love and deepest sympathy." "I am so very sorry. Nick was one of the best people I have ever had the privilege of knowing and working with. Kind, passionate, compassionate and full of talent and love. My thoughts are with you all xx," writes Cassie Compton.
