'American Idol' Top 24: Judges declare Sage as 'Top 5' material but fans say 'don't see it'

Sage's decision to sing Dolly Parton's 'Jolene' didn't sit well with 'American Idol' fans, who felt she sounded too 'generic'

When 'American Idol' Season 20 contestant Sage announced that she would be singing Dolly Parton's 'Jolene' during the Top 24 performance, everybody immediately expressed concern, and for good reason. Filling in Dolly Parton's shoes is no joke, and attempting to put a spin on the vocal powerhouse's songs is a pretty huge task, so guest mentor Jimmie Allen was skeptical about Sage's decision.

But Sage managed to put Jimmie at ease with her vocals and unique take on the iconic song. By the end of Sage's rehearsals, Jimmie declared that Dolly would be proud of her performance. Sage managed to charm the show's judges- Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie, as well with her underrated vocals. The judges even declared her as a strong contender for the Top 5 list. While the judges can't seem to get enough of her, sadly fans weren't as impressed with Sage's performance.

From slamming Sage's take on 'Jolene' to disagreeing with the judges' verdict of her performance, fans had quite a few strong thoughts about Sage's performance. A fan tweeted, "Sage singing Jolene? Someone should tell some of these people they're not capable of singing certain songs. #AmericanIdol." "Jolene and sage just didn’t mix well for me #americanidol," wrote a fan. 

Another fan shared, "Top 5 for Sage? I don't see it. Very generic sounding to me. #americanidol." "I just don't think it's going to be enough to go through, for me. But Top 5? Not seeing that. But the judges influence people so we'll see," seconded a fan on the show's YouTube clip of Sage's performance. "The judges said she could be top 05 , in my opinion I disagree. I sing too but i'm not in the big industry. I have been watching American Idol since Paula, Randy, and Simon were judging. Who thinks that girl is top 05," wondered a fan. "Every singer has been weak so far Katty is talking garbage if that's top 5 then I'm done with this show," commented a fan.

Since the audience will be deciding which of the contestants will be going through to the next round with their votes, we'll just have to see whether America agrees with the judges or not.
