'Homecoming' Season 2: Release date, plot, cast, trailer and all you need to know about the psycho thriller
After finishing its debut season, the critically-acclaimed series returns for its second season sans Julia Roberts, who is only serving as the show's executive producer this time around. Instead, we have the singer and actress, Janelle Monáe, as the lead with a fresh storyline and other new characters.
However, the story will still be set in the universe where the 'Homecoming' transition facility for soldiers still exists, run by the Geist Group. But while Season 1 dealt with what was happening inside the facility, co-creator Micah Bloomberg has said that in Season 2, the show was "broadening the world". Eli Horowitz, the other creator, added that while "Season 1 was so confined and suffocating, and they were all wondering about the world outside the facility, while Season 2 is very much about the outdoors and the natural world, and people trying to get inside the Geist headquarters".
Release Date
'Homecoming' Season 2 will premiere on May 22 on Amazon Prime Video.
Plot
Season 2 introduces the show's new main character, Jackie, a military veteran, waking up in a canoe in the middle of a lake with no recollection of how she got there — or who she is. Jackie's search to figure out who she is, brings her into the ambit of the Geist Group and their 'Homecoming' initiative. Her search also leads her to Walter Cruz, who returns to the series as a returning character along with Audrey. Season 2 will also feature Geist CEO Leonard Geist and a high-ranking military official named Francine Bunda.
Season 1 had followed Heidi Bergman, a counselor at the Homecoming Transitional Support Center, a live-in facility run by the Geist Group. The facility is publicized as a way to help soldiers transition to civilian life. Four years later, Bergman has started a new life working as a waitress but has difficulty remembering her time at the facility. After a US Department of Defense auditor inquires as to why she left Homecoming, Bergman comes to realize that she had been misled about the true purpose of the facility.
It is not a center to help soldiers rejoin civilian life but a way to successfully make them "blank slates" with no PTSD or triggers from war duty and ready to be deployed again.
At the end of Season 1, Heidi and her favorite patient, Walter Cruz, manage to escape the clutches of the Geist Group.
Cast
Janelle Monáe will play the lead character of Jackie, an amnesiac, military veteran.
The founder and CEO of the shadowy Geist Corporation, Leonard Geist, will be played by Oscar-winner Chris Cooper.
Joan Cusack will play the shady high-ranking military official Francine Bunda, who is in cahoots with Leonard Geist.
Returning cast members are Stephan James as Walter Cruz and Hong Chau as Audrey Temple, the Geist employee, who is attracted to Monáe's character, Jackie.
Creators
Written by Micah Bloomberg and Eli Horowitz, the series was originally released as a Gimlet Media podcast under the same name. Season 1 was directed by Sam Esmail. In Season 2, Kyle Patrick Alvarez will take over as director and executive producer. Alvarez and Horowitz are also serving as showrunners.
The series is co-produced by Amazon Studios and UCP, a division of NBCUniversal Content Studios. Additional executive producers include Julia Roberts through production company Red Om Films, Esmail through Esmail Corp., Chad Hamilton of Anonymous Content, and Chris Giliberti, Alex Blumberg and Matt Lieber of Gimlet Media.
Trailer
The 30-second teaser trailer introduces the show's new main character, Jackie (Janelle Monae), waking up in a canoe in the middle of a lake, with a mobile phone but no paddles. She screams for help because she is far from any shore.
"You need to do what you think is right but you must protect yourself because nobody else will," a voice says in the background to Jackie as a montage of the season's new characters flash. Chris Cooper is shown farming some exotic plant that might be the key to the mind-altering drug the Geist Group is producing and Joan Cusack, who plays a military official, seems very interested in this plant.
We also see Jackie running into Walter at the diner that Julia Robert's character had found him in at the end of Season 1. Audrey Temple is also back and we see her kiss Jackie at a party.
