Golden Globes 2020: Greta Gerwig and Lulu Wang snubbed as awards shut women out of Best Director category for 4th year running

It's a little disappointing that even in 2019, we continue to deal with this problem in the industry, especially this year when we had projects by a number of great female directors including Greta Gerwig ('Little Women') and Lulu Wang ('The Farewell').

If you thought the battle for representation in Hollywood is over, think again. The list of nominees for the 77th Golden Globes is out and once again, there are no female directors nominated.

The last time a woman was nominated for Best Director was in 2015 when Ava DuVernay got a nomination for her work on 'Selma'. Only one woman, Barbra Streisand, has ever won the award.

We don't mean to say that any of the directors who actually got nominated were undeserving of the honor. However, it's a little disappointing that even in 2019, we continue to deal with this problem in the industry, especially this year when we had projects by a number of great female directors including Greta Gerwig ('Little Women') and Lulu Wang ('The Farewell').

Gerwig's exclusion, in particular, comes as a surprise considering the success of 'Little Women'. Interestingly enough, the film's lead actress Saoirse Ronan has received a nomination for the 'Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama' award.

As is to be expected, the lack of women in the nominees' list hasn't gone unnoticed and a number of people have taken to Twitter and other social media websites to express their frustration. Here are some of the tweets shared:

"Let's be real. If they took away Actor/Actress categories and just made it one Best Performer category....there would be no women nominees!" - @TVPartyPlanner

"Of course there are no women director or screenplay writer #GoldenGlobes nominees this year because sexism is still rampant in Hollywood" - @maraleia

"It's not that I'm not annoyed that there are no women nominated for Best Director for this year's #GoldenGlobes, but it's harder to make an argument for them to be nominated when none of the Best Picture nominees were directed by women either." - @pknail

The nominations were announced on December 9 in a ceremony with Tim Allen, Dakota Fanning, and Susan Kelechi Watson announcing the names.

The 77th Golden Globe Awards will be conducted at the Beverly Hills Hilton and broadcast live on NBC on January 5.
