LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: In the feudal Japanese political realm depicted in FX's 'Shōgun' series, reality often takes a back seat, a fact made even more apparent by the valiant sacrifice made by Toda Hiromatsu (Tokuma Nishioka), the loyal aide of Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada).

Based on James Clavell's novel of the same name, the series stands out as one of the year's finest, thanks to its captivating narrative, compelling storytelling, and impressive acting talents.

With only two episodes till the end, the historical drama is moving quickly, and the startling twist of Hiromatsu's sacrifice only adds to the story's depth.

Hiromatsu was opposed to Toranaga's decision to surrender, and after failing to persuade his Lord, he felt so dishonored that he chose to end his own life.

Initially, it appears that Hiromatsu's decision was motivated by his rage towards Toranaga, however, it was later revealed that he killed himself as a ruse to persuade Ishido Kazunari (Takehiro Hira) of Toranaga's genuine intention to surrender.

His act will undoubtedly accomplish its goal, giving Toranaga more time to expand his force.

Considering his strategic nature, it is safe to assume that he will ensure Hiromatsu's sacrifice is not in vain.

How will Toda Hiromatsu's seppuku benefit Toranaga?

With Hiromatsu's seppuku, Toranaga most certainly succeeded in tricking Ishido into believing that he was surrendering—a claim that is far from accurate.

This deception will make Ishido overconfident, leading him to relax his security in Osaka, giving Toranaga enough advantage to launch an assault and ultimately seize the ultimate authority.

Furthermore, Hirmoatsu's death portrays Toranaga as a beaten and broken leader, a perception that could sway his adversaries and buy him crucial time to achieve his objectives.

What is Crimson Sky plan in 'Shōgun'?

Crimson Sky was first used in the series in Episode 6 when Hiromatsu persuaded Toranaga to use the war tactic to seize control.

But what exactly is this unusual war tactic?? Simply put, Crimson Sky is a single brutal invasion of Osaka Castle, orchestrated by Toranaga's forces to overthrow the council and establish a new government with Toranaga as the sole ruler.
