LA MUGA, SPAIN: 'Land of Women' Episode 1 has officially premiered on Apple TV+, following Gala (Eva Longoria), a woman accustomed to a luxurious life in New York City, whose world is suddenly upended by a shocking revelation involving her husband, Fred (James Purefoy).

While preparing to launch her own wine business, Gala is hit with devastating news: Fred has borrowed $15 million from a criminal organization and faces a dangerous ultimatum to repay the debt. Fred invested the money in Gala's wine business. The $15 million debt to a criminal organization not only threatens their financial stability but also their safety.

With Fred's sudden disappearance and the massive debt looming over them, Gala's dream of a successful wine business is in jeopardy.

Gala swiftly gathers her daughter Kate (Victoria Bazua) and her mother Julia (Carmen Maura) and informs them that they are heading to the Spanish town La Muga, her mother's hometown.

When they arrive in La Muga, it becomes apparent that everyone seems to hate Julia. What is in Julia's past that has made everyone in the Spanish town despise her? Let's discuss!

Julia lived in La Muga throughout her childhood and much of her adulthood. It appears that she left the town after marrying Gala's father.

The reason behind this animosity remain unclear, but it hints at a deeper story and unresolved issues from Julia's past. Julia often reminisces about her past, claiming she was beautiful and had some wonderful moments in La Muga.

Her nostalgia paints a picture of a life once filled with joy and vitality. During a moment in Episode 1, when Julia jumps into the river, she experiences a flashback to her younger days, where she is seen enjoying the company of a man in the water. This glimpse into her past suggests a time when Julia was carefree and possibly involved in romantic escapades.

This flashback hints at the possibility that Julia's interactions with men in La Muga might have stirred jealousy and resentment among the local women. It's possible that some women in the town despise her because she attracted their lovers or had affairs with their boyfriends. These unresolved tensions from her past could explain the cold reception Julia, Gala, and Kate receive upon their return to La Muga.

It's also possible that Julia's strained relationship with her sister, Mariona (Gloria Muñoz), stems from past romantic entanglements. Julia's flashbacks to her youthful days in La Muga suggest she had a magnetic charm that attracted many admirers. This allure may have caused hatred between the sisters if they both had feelings for the same men or if Julia had an affair with Mariona's boyfriend.

Such a history could explain why Mariona sold the family house to Amat (Santiago Cabrera) without even informing her. This unresolved family drama is likely to play a significant role in the unfolding narrative, revealing more about Julia's past in La Muga.

Can Julia stay in La Muga peacefully?

Julia and Gala are in quite a tough spot in La Muga. If they are disliked by many, particularly the women there, it could mean facing social isolation or even hostility. Living under such circumstances can indeed be challenging, especially when don't have enough money.

Julia and Gala have no choice but to stay in La Muga because they lack the means to support themselves, owing to Fred's dealings with a dangerous criminal who might even seek to harm them if they are found.

Gala's car accident with Amat's truck, resulting in damage to the grapes, has also created a tense situation in La Muga. The loss of grapes is not just a financial setback for Amat but also affects many others who depend on the grape harvest for their livelihoods. When Amat explains to the women how an American woman (referring to Gala) inadvertently caused this damage, the women's immediate reaction is harsh.

Given the women's harsh reaction, Gala and Julia could indeed face a difficult time in La Muga. Some women may also demand compensation from Gala and Julia.

Moreover, if Gala and Julia are unable to meet these demands, tensions could escalate within the community.

It would indeed be intriguing to see how Gala and Julia navigate their lives in La Muga under such challenging circumstances.
