Timothée Chalamet's $634M hit 'Wonka' leaves Netflix amid growing buzz for sequel — all you need to know
Timothée Chalamet's role as Willy Wonka in the 2023 fantasy film 'Wonka' delighted audiences and critics alike, raking in an impressive $634.5 million against a budget of $125 million. Now, in some bad news for fans of the 2023 hit, Netflix has decided to remove 'Wonka' from its platform, and the movie will no longer be available for streaming from December 1. However, it shouldn't be long before 'Wonka' fans get to see Chalamet reprise his role as Willy Wonka. As per several reports, director Paul King has confirmed that he has been working on a 'Wonka' sequel.
'Wonka', released on December 15, 2023, received rave reviews, ranking an 82% 'Certified Fresh' rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In terms of storyline, 'Wonka' served as a prequel to the events described in Roald Dahl's 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory'. The story follows Chalamet's Willy Wonka trying to share his chocolate with the world. Instead of the eccentric character from 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory', 'Wonka' depicts Willy as a young and optimistic candy-maker whose journey is made difficult by con artists and a chocolate cartel. Alongside Chalamet, Olivia Colman, and Hugh Grant essay leading roles in the movie.
After having impressed fans and critics in the first part, Chalamet is all set to return as Willy Wonka for a sequel that is likely to begin production in 2026. Writer-director Paul King has expressed his willingness to explore further story arcs. Even as early as last year, King had told ScreenRant that he would "love to make another Willy Wonka film if we could find the right story". "So, there is material to work from. I think if we came back to the character, it would probably be between here and Charlie because there's 30 years there to explore," King had said.
However, as of now, no official announcement regarding the potential production or release of a 'Wonka' sequel has been made. As per ProductionList, King is co-writing the script with Simon Farnaby and Simon Stephenson, while Michael Siegel and Kevin McCormick are co-producing; the movie is expected to go into production in January next year. Meanwhile, Chalamet will soon be seen in the sports drama 'Marty Supreme', set to be released on December 25.
