Will Smith seems to address Jada's affair with August Alsina in 2018 clip asking her to 'make herself happy'
An old video of Will Smith has resurfaced online in which the 51-year-old appeared to address his wife Jada Pinkett Smith's affair with August Alsina. The video was reportedly self-shot by Will in 2018. In the clip, the actor was seen navigating a golf course while discussing the marriage issues - saying how he advised Jada to go out and “make herself happy”.
“Love. I asked her what was one of the biggest revelations she had had about love. She said you cannot make a person happy. I thought that was a real deep idea. I remember the day I said to Jada, ‘I retire. I retire from trying to make you happy. I need you to go make yourself happy and just prove to me it's even possible’,” Will said in the video. He added: “We started talking about it, we came into this false romantic concept that somehow when we got married we would become one. What we realized is that we were two completely separate people on two completely separate individual journeys and that we were choosing to walk our separate journeys together.
“But her happiness was her responsibility and my happiness was my responsibility. And we decided that we were gonna find our individual, internal private separate joy and then we were going to present ourselves to the relationship and to each other already happy. Not coming to each other begging with our empty cups out demanding that she fills my cup and demanding that she meets my needs. It's unfair and it's kind of unrealistic. And it can be destructive to place the responsibility for your happiness on anybody other than yourself.”
On Friday, July 10, Jada revealed on her chat show, ‘Red Table Talk’, that she had an affair with Alsina. Speaking with Will on her Facebook show, the 48-year-old admitted that the relationship with the 27-year-old singer happened while the pair were separated. The actress said she met Alsina through their son 22-year-old Jaden and mentioned that at the time the singer was “really sick”. “And it all started with him just needing some help, me wanting to help his health, his mental state,” Jada said. “The outpouring for him from our family was initially about his health,' she said. 'We found all those different resources to help pull him through and from there you and I were going through a very difficult time.”
After Jada’s confession, Will said in the show that he was “done with you”, while the ‘Girls Trip’ star said that they decided to separate for a “period of time”. “And then what did you do, Jada?” Will asked to which Jada replied: “As time went on, I got into a different type of entanglement with August. The only person that can give permission in that circumstance is myself”, denying Alsina’s claims that Will give Jada “permission” to have an affair outside their marriage.
“But what August was probably trying to communicate because I could see how he could see it as permission because we were separated amicably, and I think he wanted to make it clear he's not a homewrecker because he's not,” she added. When Will pressed her, saying "an entanglement? A relationship”, she countered by saying: “I was in a lot of pain, and I was very broken. In the process of that relationship, I definitely realized that you can't find happiness outside yourself. I just wanted to feel good, It had been so long since I felt good... and it was really a joy to just help heal somebody.”
