Is 'The Copenhagen Test' Season 2 confirmed? Simu Liu's espionage thriller's future uncertain after lukewarm response
Simu Liu's spy thriller, 'The Copenhagen Test,' hasn't exactly been a smash hit. The spy thriller opened to a rather lukewarm critical response, and with that, a Season 2 has yet to be officially confirmed. The eight-episode series follows Alexander Hale (Liu), whose eyes and ears were hacked by nanotech called Cassandra RU258. With Hale broadcasting everything he sees, whoever is watching through his lens could compromise secret service ops across the world.
When The Orphanage, the secret agency Hale works for, realizes the hacking, they choose to keep the channel open to find the ones responsible. Hale's mission now sees him choose between risking innocent lives, compromising real operations, and earning his loyalty despite knowing he doesn't have the entire picture.
Season 1 ends on a cliffhanger with “Uncle” Victor (Saul Rubinek), a close friend of Hale's parents and a major figure in his upbringing, revealed to be the mastermind. The revelations continue as Hale discovers that he is not the only one who was altered. Five other individuals across the world have also been implanted with the nanites.
The series boasts a slew of impressive names alongside Liu and Melissa Barrera. Mark O’Brien, Hannah Cruz, Saul Rubinek, and Sara Amini star alongside Brian d’Arcy James as Director of Operations Peter Moira, Sinclair Daniel as analyst Samantha Parker, and Kathleen Chalfant as St. George, the head of the Orphanage.
That said, the reviews weren't exactly promising. 'The Copenhagen Test' had a few disappointing reviews. Variety's Aramide Tinubu said, “The Copenhagen Test” has a great deal of potential, but its overly complicated plot, crammed with too many characters, leads nowhere." Daniel Finberg of THR said, "Simu Liu and Melissa Barrera’s Peacock Espionage Drama Takes Too Long to Uncover the Fun Stuff." Collider gave it a good review, lavishing Liu and Barrera's performance — "Simu Liu and Melissa Barrera Shine in a Smart, Twisty Spy Thriller Series With a Sci-Fi Edge," the outlet said.
With this, there is a possibility that Peacock might wait to see the kind of numbers the spy thriller garners before any announcements. As it stands, the show could do without a second season, but much depends on what a potential storyline for season 2 would look like for the streamer to explore a new instalment. For now, it's a bit of a wait as fans await to see the future of the show.
All eight episodes of 'The Copenhagen Test' are available for streaming on Peacock.
