While most netizens filled the comments section with witty one-liners and a host of laughing emojis and gifs, many were left contemplating the reason behind Musk's decision. Eventually, Financial Times correspondent Patrick McGee offered an explanation. He averred that the tweet was an inside joke directed at the lawyer for the investors who are suing Musk.
The Twitter CEO is currently facing a lawsuit from a group of Tesla investors who claim he defrauded them by tweeting that he had "funding secured" to take Tesla private at $420 per share, on August 7, 2018. Commenting on Musk's tweet about his change of name, McGee wrote, "For anyone not in on the joke, the lawyer for the investors suing Elon accidentally called him “Mr Tweet” while grilling him this week." Elaborating further, McGee added, "I’m sorry there’s no recording of this — it was prohibited — but basically Musk replied “Mr. Tweet?” The whole courtroom laughed. And then Musk said: “actually pretty accurate”. Going by memory here, not for the history books."
