Who is Shannon Joy? NY woman claims maskless cop arrested her for wearing mask wrong
ROCHESTER, NEW YORK: A mother and also a local radio host in Rochester was arrested for not wearing her mask properly at a school board meeting. Shannon Joy was attending a Fairport Central School District school board meeting on Wednesday night, August 25, when the incident happened. She was also pressed with criminal trespassing charges.
Joy live-streamed the incident on Facebook and said, “Yup. I was handcuffed & detained by Monroe County Sheriff tonight for inappropriately wearing my mask at the Fairport School District board meeting.” The incident happened after a school board member during the meeting demanded a small break since people were “refusing to wear masks”. At the time, Joy’s mask was also over her mouth and below her nose.

Initially, attendees resisted the demand for recess, but when it received support, Joy reportedly told the school board, “This is not leadership. You asked us to be respectful of you, and you can’t respect the taxpayers and citizens. This is silly.” She was then asked to leave the event since her mask was still not covering her nose fully. But instead of leaving, Joy lowered her mask and started live-streaming it.
Later, Monroe County Sheriff’s Deputies were called to the scene, who took Joy outside the premises and handcuffed her. She shared a picture of her arrest on Twitter and captioned it as, “The irony. I was arrested for wearing my mask improperly. By a barefaced police officer and another with the mask under her chin. How is this America?”
The irony.

In another tweet, she wrote, “Ok let me amend this. I was told to leave a public meeting because my mask was on the tip of my nose and not the BRIDGE of my nose. When I declined to leave for such a stupid reason they declared I was TRESPASSING and had me arrested in charged with criminal trespass.”

Joy also spoke with The Daily Wire and said, “It is becoming blatantly apparent that the Fairport School Board, Superintendent Brett Provenzano and outside organization ‘Black In The Burbs’ collaborated to create meeting conditions designed to result in my arrest. I have been an outspoken community organizer with a large media platform and am often critical of the board’s policy & practices regarding masking, coerced vaccination, Critical Race Theory & Comprehensive Sex Education.”
She went on to say, “These individuals are so frightened of transparency and organic, open discourse that they sought to silence, intimidate and publicly humiliate me to serve as a warning to any other parent who dares to speak up. Instead, they have inadvertently outraged our community even further,” before adding, “My attorneys at Hogan Willig will work to get ALL CHARGES DROPPED (Joy’s emphasis) on September 14th and we will be looking at filing lawsuits as well.”
The president of the Fairport Central School District school board Peter Forsgren also commented on the incident. Forsgren told The Daily Wire via email, “The district followed its established policy regarding the public comment period. Ms. Joy was not on the list for public comments.”
Meanwhile, people on the Internet did not seem to sympathize with Joy as a user tweeted, “Let’s stop blaming the police, they did their job. Complaint from person in authority of the property that you refused to leave said property when told = Trespass. Said property was a school which elevates it to Criminal Trespass 3rd. Police professionally affected an arrest. End.” Another one said, “Your choice. If you want to be an idiot - you pay the consequences. Don't be so confrontational would be my advise.” “Lesson learned wear a mask. It’s your right not to protect yourself, but, unless you isolate yourself you have the duty to protect people you are around,” the third added.
