Who is Montserrat Bernabeu? Shakira's ex mother-in-law is sad she has no one to call her grandma now
BARCELONA, SPAIN: The breakup of Shakira and Gerard Pique, a couple who were together for more than ten years, has left their extended families affected as well. Recently, Pique's mother, Montserrat Bernabeu, spoke about being particularly devastated by a situation as it has affected her relationship with her grandchildren Sasha and Milan
In June 2022, the former couple issued a joint statement to indicate that they had ended their relationship. They began dating in 2010, having first connected while working together on the music video for Shakira's song 'Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)'

Shakira had made several compromises once her son came into the picture, making a home in Spain. “Once Milan started school, at the end of 2014, I knew that my constant travel and nomadic existence had to be put on the back burner and my career had to be put in second gear. I knew that when he started school, I had to settle down, plant roots in Barcelona, and be there for him and for Gerard and then later on for Sasha as well.” This meant that Bernabeu got time to spend with her grandchildren.
According to Lecturas magzine, Bernabeu was totaly devasted when her son Gerad and singer Shakira broke up amid cheating rumors. She was heartbroken by the fact that there will be no one to call her their grandmother now. In fact, Shakira's ex mother-in-law claims she did everything in her power to stop the divorce.
Who is Montserrat Bernabeu?
Pique's mother Montserrat Bernabeu is physical medicine and rehabilitation expert and has been on staff at the Institut Guttmann since 1993. From 1997 until 2018, she oversaw the Brain Injury Unit at the Neurorehabilitation Hospital in Badalona, and from 2018 on, she has held the position of Care Director at both that institution and the Brain Health Institute in Barcelona. She is now the Institute Guttmann Foundation's co-director.
She received her MD from UAB and her MS in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation from UAB's sister institution, the Universitat Autnoma de Barcelona. She has served on the board of the International Federation of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine and as president of the Spanish Neurorehabilitation Society (SENR) since 2005. (ISPRM).
She has led the ICF TBI Core Sets Project (International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health to define Main Indicators in the treatment of traumatic brain injury) at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München in Germany and has participated in a wide range of European research projects focusing on the application of new technologies to the rehabilitation of people with neurological disorders.
