LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Superhero universes aren't just stories but a big heap of knowledge that makes sense when you watch the movie. Some characters are already written in the original DC comics and are instantly recognized, and some are a surprise and need a little memory jog. Today we'll take you through the books of Greek mythology and one of the characters that inspired the villain in DC's superhero-comedy sequel 'Shazam! Fury of the Gods.' Turns out the character of "Kalypso" or "Calypso" as termed in Greek mythology is the supervillain in the upcoming sequel. While we are super-excited about the release of 'Shazam's sequel after almost 2 years, there are some things that will be new in this addition, it surely will be worth it.

Our favorite Lucy Liu will be appearing in the 'Shazam!' sequel as the powerful villain Kalypso. Although by the looks of it, Liu looks ravishing as a supervillain, it was quite confusing for the comic book fans to recognize her and piece the character into the puzzle. Liu's role isn't as instantly recognizable to comic fans as the first movie's supervillain Doctor Sivana (Mark Strong).

What day and time will ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ release? And everything else you need to know

Who was 'Kalypso' or 'Calypso' in Greek mythology?

If you're mistaking Lucy Liu's character as Eclipso, you're entirely wrong. Going down the knowledge lane and explaining a little about Greek mythology. Calypso, is the daughter of the Titan Atlas (or Oceanus or Nereus), a nymph of the mythical island of Ogygia. In Homer's epic poem the 'Odyssey', she entertained the Greek hero Odysseus for seven years, but she could not overcome his longing for home even by promising him immortality. As seen in 'Shazam: Fury of the Gods!', Calypso isn't anything like that in the mythology. In fact, she was a goddess or spirit in the form of a young woman, living in a tree, river, or mountain, and wasn't even close to the version of Calypso we will see in the movie.

What will be Kalypso's role in 'Shazam! Fury of the Gods'?

Kalypso is an original character created for the film, she did not appear in the comics, which makes this movie sequel much more interesting. Atlas - the entity who gave Shazam his stamina, and the fact that Atlas is the father of Kalpso and her sisters makes this entire thing a chase for powers. Nothing has been revealed as of yet, but we're assuming that the 'Fury of the Gods' term means that the Greek goddesses will come down to earth to take away one of the powers that have been gifted to Shazam.

But, everything is speculation and we'll get to know more when the movie will be released by Warner Bros Pictures in the United States on March 17, 2023. Until then, stay tuned.
