Legendary football coach and broadcaster John Madden died aged 85. the NFL confirmed on Tuesday night, December 28. The league said that Madden died unexpetedly in the morning.

"On behalf of the entire NFL family, we extend our condolences to Virginia, Mike, Joe and their families," said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. "We all know him as the Hall of Fame coach of the Oakland Raiders and broadcaster who worked for every major network, but more than anything, he was a devoted husband, father and grandfather."

"Nobody loved football more than Coach. He was football. He was an incredible sounding board to me and so many others. There will never be another John Madden, and we will forever be indebted to him for all he did to make football and the NFL what it is today," Goodell added. 

John Madden was born in Austin, Minnesota, to Earl Madden and Mary Madden in 1936. John Madden won Super Bowl XI as head coach of the Oakland Raiders. And, after his retirement, he got famous for his commentary for NFL telecasts with Pat Summerall. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in the year 2006.

Madden worked for as a color analyst for all four major networks: CBS (1979–1993), Fox (1994–2001), ABC (2002–2005), and NBC (2006–2008). He hanged up his boots from broadcasting after the 2008 NFL season.

Madden is survived by his wife Virginia, and his two sons, Joseph and Michael.

John Madden tied the knot with Virginia Fields on December 26, 1959, in a marriage ceremony that took place inside the St Mary of the Assumption Church in Santa Maria. They two had reportedly met in a bar in Pismo Beach, California. Madden and Fields share two sons -- Joseph and Michael.

Fields has been known as the central figure in the Madden household, as she looks after the essential things of the members of the family. Over the years, she has taken care of various antiques that the family owns, especially a highway YIELD sign, which Ted Hendricks, the three-time-All-America linebacker, gifted to Madden when he retired.

Fields and Madden resided in Pleasanton, California, with their two kids, Joseph and Michael. Michael, also known as Mike, pursues a career in football and is a receiver for the Harvard Crimson. Joseph, or Joe, attended Brown University. Fields is known as a very private person.
