Where is Barbieland? Neil deGrasse Tyson uses science to deduce exact location
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: In Greta Gerwig's 'Barbie', which has crossed the $1 billion mark, the titular doll travels from her formerly ideal Barbieland to the "real world" in order to find solutions for the unforeseen health issues she is experiencing.
Barbieland appears to be a parallel universe despite the fact that Margot Robbi's Barbie, Ryan Gosling's Ken, Gloria (played by America Ferrera), Sasha (Ariana Greenblatt), and Mattel's executives can travel between it and the real world. All of the characters in 'Barbie' also wonder whether Barbieland is real.
This has given rise to a burning question: where exactly is Barbieland? In fact, the characters in the film never actually mention the exact location.
However, like several other enigmas of the world, Neil deGrasse Tyson has an answer for this too.
Tyson, who has approximately 20 million followers across Facebook, Threads, and X, has used his training to reveal the location of Barbieland.
Where is Barbieland?
"In Barbie the Movie, the Moon's orientation places Barbie World between 20 & 40 degrees North Latitude on Earth. Palm trees further constrain latitude between 20 & 30 degrees," Tyson shared in a Facebook post.
"The Sun & Moon rose & set over the ocean. So if it's in the United States, then Barbie World lands somewhere in the Florida Keys," he added.
Florida city's mayor chimes in on Barbieland location
Teri Johnston, the mayor of Key West, who is only the second woman to lead the nation's southernmost city, is ecstatic about the scientist's hypothesis.
Johnston chuckled during a phone conversation with the Miami Herald on Friday morning. "I think that's terrific," she added. "It's just such a wonderful time to have something quirky and positive and, you know, so, energetic out in the world today."
The mayor, who "can't wait to see" 'Barbie', continued, "Well, we've got one of everything else. Why not Barbie?"
Will there be a 'Barbie' sequel?
There seem to be no formal discussions about a sequel at this point, although Gerwig and the rest of the ensemble haven't ruled anything out.
However, Gerwig earlier hinted at the possibility of a Barbie Cinematic Universe, telling Variety in November 2022 that "it would certainly be exciting."
Margot Robbie said during the original movie's promotion that it "could go a million different directions" from where it finishes, but she also emphasized that the movie wasn't necessarily built with sequels in mind.
"I think you fall into a bit of a trap if you try and set up a first movie whilst also planning for sequels," she told Time.
Is 'Barbie' a hit?
Barbie is definitely a hit. According to official Warner Bros projections, Greta Gerwig's blockbuster has already made an amazing $1.03 billion worldwide in just three weeks of its release.
