Spoilers for ‘The Stand’ Episode 5 ‘Fear and Loathing in New Vegas’

Episode 5 of ‘The Stand’, titled ‘Fear and Loathing in New Vegas’, the mid-mark for the CBS All Access limited series gave us a glimpse into the power center of the story’s antagonist Randall Flagg (Alexander Skarsgård). We saw Dayna (Natalie Martinez) working to infiltrate Flagg’s inner circle. She, along with Judge Farris (Gabrielle Rose), and Tom Cullen (Brad William Henke) was sent to Vegas to spy on the Dark Man.

During this process, Dayna met Julie Lawry (Kat McNamara) and Lloyd Henreid (Nat Wolff). Lloyd, if you remember, was a low-life criminal, jailed for a botched robbery at a convenience store. When we last saw him, Flagg promised to free Lloyd on the condition that he pledges his fealty and becomes his right-hand man. And the latter agreed readily.

Tom, the other spy from Boulder in a different part of Vegas, tries to get a job. He is later spotted by Dayna cleaning up after violent gladiator-like sports that entertain the masses. Dayna, sensing that Tom is in trouble, sent him a note that said “Run”. But it would seem that Dayna was in trouble herself. Near the end of the episode, Flagg told her that he knows why Dayna is there, adding that he had even discovered the second spy waiting on the edge of town. Dayna tried to kill him but failed. Ultimately, she stabs a pair of scissors into her own throat instead, taking Tom’s identity with her.

Back in Boulder, Nadine (Amber Heard) and Harold (Owen Teague) were busy finishing their mission -- killing Mother Abagail (Whoopi Goldberg) and the council. Last week saw that Nadine killed Teddy (Eion Bailey). And Harold continued to feel guilty about it. Despite the fact that his death was ruled a suicide by Stu (James Marsden) and Larry. Frannie (Odessa Young) seemed to be the only one suspicious, asking Larry to investigate what’s going on.

Meanwhile, Mother Abagail reminded Nadine that she protected Joe (Gordon Cormier) across the country to Boulder. It was revealed later that Harold put a camera in a stuffed bear on Frannie’s dresser. The final scene sees a note on the door of Mother Abagail: “Please do not come looking for me. I will be back if it is his will. I love you all.”

What to look forward to in episode 6?

Episode 6 of ‘The Stand’, titled ‘The Vigil’, directed by Chris Fisher, written by Jill Killington and Knate Lee, might give more answers about why Mother Abagail leaves. As per the book of the same name written by Stephen King, Abagail becomes frustrated that God is no longer speaking to her, in her words, it feels like she is "praying into a dead phone".

In King’s book, she feels that the Boulder Free Zone is not serving the intended purpose God had in bringing its members together, and she feels at fault. She then disappears into the wilderness to fast, pray, and repair her relationship with God so that she can begin receiving his instructions clearly again. During her absence, Harold constructs a stick of dynamite that Nadine plants in the house shared by Nick Andros (Henry Zaga) and Ralph Brentner, who has been gender-swapped in this limited series to become Ray Brentner (Irene Bedard).
