Dwayne Johnson drops major update on ‘Jumanji 3’ filming status: ‘To work with…’
On February 17, fans of the 'Jumanji' films received an exciting update on the next installment of the franchise, titled 'Jumanji 3'. The film's lead star, Dwayne Johnson, shared on his Instagram account that Danny DeVito has wrapped up shooting for his portion of the movie. The images showcase The Rock posing with 81-year-old DeVito and Kevin Hart on the film set. In the caption of the post, Johnson penned a note for DeVito as he wrote, "That’s an official Jumanji wrap on the one and the only, Danny DeVito. To work with you, and learn from you has been an honor ~ and to call you my friend, will always be a privilege. Thank you, brother for your anchoring heart and JOY throughout our Jumanji franchise." DeVito plays Eddie in the film series as he brings the role of Spencer's quick-witted grandfather to life.
A direct sequel to 2019's 'Jumanji: The Next Level,' the film will be released in theaters on December 11, 2026. Filming for the upcoming project has been underway since November 2025. Jake Kasdan will return as director, and he has co-written the script alongside Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg. It features an ensemble cast comprising Dwayne Johnson as Dr. Xander 'Smolder' Bravestone, Kevin Hart as Franklin 'Mouse' Finbar, Jack Black as Professor Sheldon 'Shelly' Oberon, Awkwafina as Ming Fleetfoot, Karen Gillan as Ruby Roundhouse, and Nick Jonas as Jefferson 'Seaplane' McDonough. Others include Morgan Turner as Martha Kaply, Ser'Darius Blain as Anthony 'Fridge' Johnson, Alex Wolff as Spencer Gilpin, Madison Iseman as Bethany Walker, Bebe Neuwirth as Nora Shepherd, Danny DeVito as Edward 'Eddie' Gilpin, Marin Hinkle as Janice Gilpin, Rhys Darby as Nigel Billingsley, and Lamorne Morris as the heater repairman.
New cast members for the sequel film include Brittany O'Grady, Burn Gorman, Jack Jewkes, and Dan Hildebrand. No information about the plot has been revealed so far, but the sequel will reportedly continue the story from 'The Next Level.' 53-year-old Johnson shared in December 2019 that the upcoming film will delve into the true identity of the player who has been controlling the villain Jurgen the Brutal, played by 'Game of Thrones' star Rory McCann.
Moreover, the untitled adventure comedy film is the fifth and final installment in the 'Jumanji' film series. The franchise began in 1995 with 'Jumanji,' followed by 'Zathura: A Space Adventure' in 2005, 'Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle' in 2017, and 'Jumanji: The Next Level' in 2019. The last film picked up the story two years after 'Welcome to the Jungle' and centered on the same group of teenagers, who returned to play the game, while facing new challenges and taking on a brand new villain. The sequel film is produced in association with Columbia Pictures, Matt Tolmach Productions, Seven Bucks Productions (Johnson’s production company), and The Detective Agency. It will be distributed by Sony Pictures.
