LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA : A major scene from Mat Cauthon's book story was stolen by another character in 'The Wheel of Time' Season 1's setup. A surprise deviation from the original 'Wheel of Time' novel was made by Amazon's adaptation of the series' first season's sixth episode, which saw Mat leave the group. He stunned everyone by deciding not to accompany them after Moiraine and the others entered the Waygate.

Rafe Judkins created the American high fantasy television series 'The Wheel of Time' for Amazon Prime Video. The television show is based on Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson's book series of the same name.

What does this mean for Mat?

Given that Mat has been taken out of the core group for the time being, it's looking increasingly probable that his story from 'The Great Hunt' may not happen in 'The Wheel of Time' Season 2, or at all, for that matter. He might miss the entire adventure because he isn't in Fal Dara, where their mission to find Padan Fain is supposed to start. Most significantly, he might not be able to blow the Horn of Valere, which would be a tremendously heroic accomplishment for Mat and would change the course of the conflict.

Where Season 1 left him lends support to the notion that 'The Wheel of Time' has no plans to allow Mat to blow the Horn of Valere. He's currently in Tar Valon, which is precisely where he needs to be for his plot from the third book, The Dragon Reborn, to materialize. In The Dragon Reborn, Mat was brought to the White Tower in Tar Valon, where the taint brought on by his prolonged contact with the ruby-hilted dagger was healed. The show appears to be planning to move Mat's journey along more quickly than it does in the novels by skipping over his Great Hunt story and healing him in Season 2, rather than delaying this development.

Does that mean someone else will blow the Horn of Valere?

Given how important the occasion is, it's difficult to picture Rand filling in for Mat, especially because the character is the Dragon Reborn and already has a lot to do in the upcoming trials. The two most likely contenders for this position are Perrin and Loial because they both participated in their journey in the television version of these events and might conceivably blow the Horn in Mat's absence. Loial might be the better option out of the two because his familiarity with history would make for an intriguing combination. Perrin's Season 2 plot might put more of an emphasis on his developing Wolfbrother abilities.

'The Wheel of Time' is currently streaming on Amazon Prime.
