Cloris Leachman, one of the oldest working actors, who won an Academy Award for her performance in ‘The Last Picture Show’, and playing Phyllis Lindstrom on ‘The Mary Tyler Moore Show’, died on Wednesday at her home in Encinitas, California, at the age of 94. As per reports, she died of natural causes, but no further details have yet been disclosed.

“It’s been my privilege to work with Cloris Leachman, one of the most fearless actresses of our time,” her longtime manager Juliet Green said. “There was no one like Cloris. With a single look she had the ability to break your heart or make you laugh ’till the tears ran down your face. You never knew what Cloris was going to say or do and that unpredictable quality was part of her unparalleled magic.”

Leachman’s long and outstanding career

Leachman entered the spotlight as a Miss America contestant in 1946. Born in Des Moines, Iowa, on April 30, 1926, Leachman grew up in a rural area beyond the city limits. Her father was a lumber company owner. She was the oldest of three children -- her younger sister would also become an actress, under the name Claiborne Cary. Leachman attended Northwestern University on a drama scholarship. While there, she did modeling and even won the Miss Chicago beauty contest.
