Lin-Manuel Miranda's upcoming 'Octet' movie adaptation's ropes in seven stars and the cast is insane
Lin-Manuel Miranda has finally revealed the cast of his upcoming feature film adaptation of the musical Broadway drama 'Octet.' In an Instagram post shared on Tuesday, Miranda listed Rachel Zegler, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Amanda Seyfried, Gaten Matarazzo, Jonathan Groff, Philipa Soo, Paul-Jordan Jansen, and Tramell Tillman. The post further indicated that rehearsals for the upcoming movie have already commenced. Zegler recently bagged an Olivier award for her performance in 'Evita' in the West End, while Seyfried appeared in 'The Testament of Ann Lee'.
Miranda, who is known for creating 'Hamilton,' had announced earlier this month that his upcoming project would be a film adaptation of the famous Dave Malloy musical, which premiered on stage Off-Broadway at the Signature Theatre in New York City on May 19, 2019. The musical, which ran for a little over a month, was directed by Annie Tippe and premiered on the West Coast at Berkeley Repertory Theatre in 2022, where it ran for five weeks.
The official synopsis notes that the upcoming film follows "eight internet-obsessed people who meet in a church basement and lock their phones in a box." It further reads, "The group of people are struggling with digital dependency, charting their compulsions using only the analog vibrancy of their own voices. With witty lyrics, shimmering harmonies and virtuosic solos, 'Octet' sings of connection, redemption, hope — and how we can be truly present with each other." Miranda previously adapted 'Tick, Tick, Boom!' in 2021, and the upcoming film marks his second directorial outing.
In a recently released statement that marked the announcement of the upcoming 'Octet' film adaptation, Miranda had remarked, "I’ve been obsessed since I saw Annie Tippe’s production in November 2019, and working on adapting this with Dave for the past six years. Now we get to make the movie. And what a joy to officially partner with Julie Oh, my ride-or-die in the movie business since tick, tick…Boom! Thank you to everyone on our team at 5000 Broadway for their work in making this a reality." The film adaptation is being produced by Julie Oh, the new head of TV and film at 5000 Broadway Productions.
John Skidmore of Best Kept Secret Productions and Luis A. Miranda, Jr. of 5000 Broadway Productions are also on board as producers. Johnny Holland, Diana DiMenna, and Owen Panettieri are the executive producers. On the other hand, the film is also being executive-produced and financed by Caren Jacobs, TodayTix Group, Sander Jacobs, Jeffrey Seller, Teresa Tsai, and John Gore, representing Broadway.com. Malloy himself is adapting his musical for the big screen and is on board as an executive producer.
