Is Martin Scorsese in ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’? ‘Star Wars’ fans are loving one surprise return
It appears that 'Star Wars' qualifies as cinema for Martin Scorsese, especially after he minced no words when criticizing Marvel. Likening the superhero franchise to 'theme parks,' the director has been making it Superheroes vs. Scorsese for some time now. That said, he may have taken the first step to brokering peace by playing a voice role in 'The Mandalorian & Grogu'.

In the latest trailer for the film, the legendary director is seen voicing an Ardennian shopkeeper who may have information on the Hutts. Scorsese's character appears to be mighty friendly in the beginning, and he seems particularly helpful. "For that price, I’ll tell you whatever you want," he says when Mando offers him a coin emblazoned with the New Republic symbol. However, he makes a dash when the bounty hunter reveals he's looking for a Hutt.'
His participation was confirmed by Lucasfilm and Disney. His role also sparked excitement on social media, with fans delighted by the news. "Scorsese x Mandalorian is crazy work. 🔥 colliding with a galaxy far, far away. 🚀🎬" one of the fans wrote on X (formerly Twitter). This was seconded by another, who was mighty excited to catch the film. "I really am anticipating this new movie," the fan posted. "From mob epics to Mandalorians — this is how you do 'absolute cinema,' a tweet read. "Scorsese in Star Wars was NOT on my 2026 bingo, but I‘m all here for it. Absolute cinema fr," one of the fans replied to the string of tweets. One segment of the fans was still struggling to believe. "Can't believe we'll get to see Scorsese credited for a Star Wars movie! Not the way I would've imagined it, but still will do," a fan said. In what was perhaps the most fitting tweet by a fan, "THIS IS THE WAAAAAAY," a post read, referencing Mando's sacred creed.
Also, Scorsese is no stranger to voicing characters. He previously lent his voice in 2004's animated feature, 'Shark Tale'. Other movies include his own 'Taxi Driver', 'Mean Streets', 'The Last Temptation of Christ', 'Killers of the Flower Moon', and 'The Wolf of Wall Street'. Jon Favreau, the creator of the film, has previously cast notable names, such as Werner Herzog and Jack Black, to lend their voices in the Mandoverse. Joining Scorsese is Pedro Pascal as Din Djarin/The Mandalorian. Sigourney Weaver as Ward, Steve Blum as Garazeb 'Zeb' Orrelios, Jeremy Allen White as Rotta the Hutt, and Jonny Coyne as an Imperial Warlord, and Dave Filoni reprises his role as New Republic X-wing pilot Trapper Wolf.
The logline of the film reads, "The New Republic enlists Din Djarin and his apprentice Grogu following the fall of the Galactic Empire, during a period where remaining Imperial warlords threaten the galaxy." The movie is a continuation of the hit miniseries, 'The Mandalorian,' which has seen three seasons on Disney+. 'The Mandalorian & Grogu' will release on May 22 in cinemas.
