'What a noble man': 'Friends' fans hail Matthew Perry for changing storyline of Chandler cheating on Monica
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Matthew Perry made 'Friends' wroterd change a controversial storyline wherein his character, Chandler Bing, cheats on his fiancee Monica, played by Courtney Cox.
The revelation was made by actress Lisa Cash, who made a short appearance in the 1999 episode from season 5, 'The One in Vegas: Part 1.'
The Chandler-Monica romance was one of the highlights of the hit sitcom that aired on NBC from 1994 to 2004.
With the new revelation, fans are even more in love with the late actor, who was found dead in a hot tub in his Los Angeles home on October 28.
Matthew Perry believed the scandalous scene would affect his character's popularity
Cash was speaking to TMZ, remembering her appearance in the hit show. She said that she received the role as an extra, and which had the chance of becoming a lot more controversial if Perry had not changed things with the creators.
According to Cash, the scene involved Chandler getting into a heated argument with Monica at the hotel in Las Vegas. Chandler was to cheat on his fiancee with Cash's hotel staff character who comes to their room with room service.
"The scene was Chandler and Monica were arguing In Vegas about Monica having lunch with [ex-boyfriend] Richard and in our script, Chandler goes up to the hotel room and orders room service and I bring it up as a hotel worker," Cash told the portal.
"And we end up talking and laughing and connecting, and Chandler ends up cheating on Monica with my character."
Cash added that Perry was uncomfortable with the storyline and asked the writers to change it.
"We had rehearsed it ... and the day before we were supposed to shoot it in front of a live audience, I was told that [Perry] went to the writers and said the fans will never forgive [Chandler] for cheating on Monica. He was probably right. That would have possibly changed the course of the show."
However, the writers did not completely cut off Cash from the show. She got a different scene as a flight attendant with David Schwimmer's Ross and Jennifer Aniston's Rachel.
"I don't think the audience would have really forgiven that. So I think it was smart," said Cash about Perry's move to save his character and the storyline.
