For the Plath kids, pursuing relationships has not been easy. Seeing that they've had to address all of their past ideals and confront behaviours they were told were wrong, it's been a learning curve. While some of them have adapted better than others, Ethan Plath continues to struggle.

As the show progresses, fans saw Ethan and Olivia's marriage truly hit some of its lowest points. They are now at an impasse, where they can't seem to agree on the same thing or what they want for their future. While Olivia intends to move out of their small town to a city, Ethan cannot see himself living anywhere but in a small town. Their relationship has gotten so strained that they struggle heavily to communicate.

Ethan and Olivia are currently separated, as they both seem to disagree regarding they are headed as a couple. As Ethan explained it, he was not even aware of her whereabouts, seeing that all she maintained was that she needed space and time alone. Ethan feels like he is watching their relationship die and blames himself for being unable to be the partner that Olivia wanted him to be. He even opened up about how vastly different their communication styles are. While Olivia prefers to deep dive into serious conversations and gets to the bottom of it all, Ethan tends to shut down and not address it, as he believes he is not a confrontational person. But seeing that his marriage looks like it is beyond repair, Ethan can't help but blame himself for pushing them to such a point. Fans, however, did not entirely agree with him, as marriages are a joint effort between husband and wife, and Ethan is not the only one at fault, even though he believes that he is. According to fans, they both need to work on themselves and their relationship.

"Let's be real: Ethan and Olivia got married super young and probably without ever going on an unsupervised date. There's bound to be some issues and I'm not sure anyone gave them the tools to deal with conflict. #welcometoplathville" pointed out a fan. "@TLC Ethan you don't need to blame yourself for any of this. You gave her whatever she wanted including pushing your family away. None of this is your fault. #welcometoplathville" added another.

"Ethan that's not healthy. You cannot be emotionally unavailable in a relationship. It won't work. #welcometoplathville" countered a fan. "@TLC Olivia makes so many ultimatums & Ethan needs to get his head out of the projects. They need to communicate. Not about the family. He is lost in his head. Olivia has a lot of responsibility because of her knowledge. Just hit the refresh button! #welcometoplathville" reasoned a fan.

With potential divorce looming over their heads, the couple seems to be at odds end. When Olivia returned home a few days later to collect some of her things, she was greeted by a note from Ethan, saying that he was going away for a while to clear his head. He didn't mention where he was, much like Olivia did, which struck her as odd. While she understood his reasons, she was worried for his safety and well being.
