VP Debate 2020: Harris slammed for her remark on Breonna Taylor, compared to ‘James talking about Malcolm X’
Racial discrimination and police violence were among many issues discussed at the Vice Presidential Debate 2020 which took place on Wednesday, October 7, at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. The one-and-a-half hour session with Kamala Harris and Mike Pence almost seemed like a game of cat and mouse chase as they were seen attacking each other at every given instance in a debate that ran high on disruptions.
While discussing the death of the 26-year-old Black girl Breonna Taylor, Pence slammed Harris and Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden for undermining the law enforcement system as he called on them for living with the impression that "America is systemically racist". Harris got rather emotional as she spoke about values and ideals. Calling Taylor “a beautiful young woman” whose life was taken “unjustifiably”, Harris said, “I've talked with Breonna's mother and her family, and her family deserves justice. We're never going to condone violence. But we always must fight for the values that we hold dear, including the fight for our ideals. I'm a former career prosecutor." “Bad cops are bad for good cops. We need reform of policing in America and our criminal justice system. That's why Joe and I will immediately ban chokeholds and carotid holds,” she added further.
Meanwhile, in response to Harris, Pence said: “The family of Breonna Taylor has our sympathies. But I trust our justice system. This presumption that you hear from Joe Biden and Kamala Harris that America is systemically racist, and as Joe Biden said, he believes that law enforcement has an implicit bias against minorities, it's a great insult to the men and women who serve in law enforcement."
Going by the reactions of the people on social media, it appears that the responses of neither Harris nor Pence could convince the viewers. Even though Biden's VP pick said that justice wasn't served in Taylor's case, majority of the viewers noted that her argument wasn't adequate. One tweeted, "I’m sorry @KamalaHarris but the correct response to. 'Was justice served for Breonna Taylor.' should have been 'No.' followed be one minute and 59.75 seconds of silence." While another agitated Twitter user wrote, "Harris deflected the breonna taylor question to George floyd. Then pence took it as an opening and continued to run with Floyd topic. So neither answered the question. I was pissed." And one of them tweeted, "Kamala Harris talking about Breonna Taylor sounds like Lebron James talking about Malcolm X. Word salads."
