Virgin Voyages cruise passenger dies after she fell from balcony and landed on co-passenger

Virgin said the incident is 'highly sensitive and extremely sad situation' and that it would not reveal the details of the passenger

MIAMI, FLORIDA: A female passenger on a Virgin Voyages cruise departing from Miami died on Sunday, April 2, 2023, after falling from a balcony on the Valiant Lady ship. The passenger fell to her death after landing on another cruise passenger.

On Monday, April 3, a Virgin Voyages spokeswoman confirmed the unfortunate incident. She said, "Yesterday evening shortly after departure, there was a medical emergency involving one of our passengers," according to TMZ. The spokesperson added, "This passenger went over their balcony onto a lower deck, and despite receiving immediate medical attention, has passed away." The situation worsened when the passenger fell on another passenger, who is thankfully safe and sound, according to TMZ.

The cruise was headed for Roatan in Honduras when the passenger fell off the balcony. The incident was swiftly followed by the ship's return to Miami, Florida, from where it had left off. The Valiant Lady arrived in Miami early morning on Sunday, April 2. The spokeswoman stated that since then, the ship has left Miami and resumed its journey, and the itinerary has been modified.

Virgin said the incident is "highly sensitive and extremely sad situation," and that it would not comment on the details of the passenger, according to Fox Business. The spokesman stated that maintaining the family's privacy and not disclosing personal information is Virgin's top concern. The Virgin spokesperson further said, "We are deeply saddened by this loss of life and our hearts and thoughts are with this person's loved ones."

The users on social media reacted to the incident, with one person writing, "Whoa I was just on that ship last week. Not sure how someone would fall off the balcony, the railings are quite high." Another person wrote, "Anyone who has been on a cruise knows you cannot just 'fall' over the railing, as they're too high. I'm curious as to how this happened."

One passenger from the same cruise wrote, "I just started my FIRST cruise with Virgin Voyages... and someone fell from their balcony and died. On the first day bro people SAW that shit happen. That is *terrifying*!!" One stunned person questioned, "Holy shot... what do you even do in that situation?" to which the passenger responded, "Pretty much just wait to see what the captain tells us to do :/."
