Touching pic shows strollers left for Ukrainian moms at Polish border: 'Moved me to tears'
The Russian invasion of Ukraine has produced a plethora of distressing and devastating moments of a country at war. But, every now and then, a ray of kindness emerges from the midst of chaos. A touching, hopeful moment during the evacuation was captured on March 3 by photojournalist Francesco Malavolta, who specializes in documenting human migration to and within Europe. The picture showed locals putting strollers at the Przemyl Gówny train station in Poland for migrants coming from Ukraine with their newborns and young children.
Social media was quick to react to such heartwarming gestures by the Polish people. One user wrote, “you captured an incredibly powerful spirit in this photo. It moved me to tears.” “This is extremely thoughtful! No more carrying everything! A Load off. Anonymous too. It’s awful all humans don’t default to this kind of behavior!” another user added. Yet another person remarked, “Poland and its people have really done such an amazing job with its humanitarianism. ♥️🇵🇱♥️”

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has triggered a mass migration unprecedented in Europe since World War II. According to Filippo Grandi, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, an estimated 1.5 million Ukrainians have left their motherland for neighboring countries. If conditions on the ground do not improve, the UN Refugee Agency predicts that this figure will continue to rise, possibly to four million. According to the United Nations, Poland has taken in the greatest number of Ukrainian refugees, however many others have arrived via Slovakia, Hungary, and other European countries.

Grandi explained to CBS News, “It's mostly women, children, elderly, many disabled people. And they are above all, frightened, traumatized. These are people that until just a few days ago, had a perfectly normal life. And in... in a matter of hours, everything is thrown apart.” By March 7, it appeared that the trend of leaving strollers for migrants had expanded across the Slovakian border. “After the Przemyśl railway station in Poland... on the border between Slovakia and Ukraine, strollers are brought for those mothers who are forced to flee Ukraine with their newborns,” Malavolta said on his Instagram account.
Although these fleeing Ukraine require more than strollers and baby supplies – they require food, shelter, and, ultimately, a peaceful and independent nation to which they can return as soon as possible – but any parent can agree that strollers, blankets, and diapers are necessary, and the gesture from their supporters in neighboring countries is unquestionably generous.
