‘Vikings’ Season 6 Episode 5 establishes our theory that Freydis might be alive
If you have seen season 5 (and if you haven’t, it’s high time to catch up with the last season of ‘Vikings’ before you get to the final one), you would remember the brutal murder of Freydis, Ivar’s wife. Although she was the perfect definition of the ‘evil queen’, her demise was definitely an unpleasant sight to behold, when Ivar strangled her to her last breath.
Now, a few months later, Alicia Agneson, the actor who plays Freydis, shared an Instagram update of her on the sets of ‘Vikings’ Season 6, immediately making us question if she will reappear. At first, we thought she might just be an apparition haunting Ivar for his torturous behavior, or perhaps we would see her in flashback. But then episode 5 of season 6 surprised us all, revealing Freydis 2.0, all in flesh and blood. But no, if you are wondering that she reappeared as Freydis, that’s not what happened. We see the same face but with a different name and personality.
King Oleg comes back from his scouting trip to Scandinavia, and announces that he will be getting married again. He then introduces his would-be wife, Katya, to Ivar and Igor. Although a Russian princess, she looks, walks, and talks just like Freydis. Ivar is shocked to the extent of seeing a ghost. And so are we.
Though we had expected to see her back, we never imagined she will be back in this form. What we need to understand here is that if Freydis had been alive all this time, it is no coincidence that she appeared out of nowhere as Oleg’s fiancée. She might have been subject to Ivar’s brutality, but she was no saint herself. However, somehow Freydis had won hearts with her shrewdness, only because fans felt that she would be the only one to teach Ivar a lesson. From feigning her emotions for Ivar to deluding him into believing that she had his child, the former slave girl was perhaps the cleverest of all and the only one who had the ability to outsmart Ivar.
Now, the question remains if Freydis actually died from the strangulation or did she manage to survive? Is it also possible that she somehow escaped and sought refuge with or got rescued by Oleg?
If that is the case, then the entire angle of Oleg meeting Ivar, befriending him, wanting to attack Kattegat, could be all a ruse to avenge Freydis’ murder? Is she back for retribution and will kill Ivar or is Katya really a lookalike of Freydis? These are some burning questions that this episode left us with and we can only hope to get some answers soon.
‘Vikings’ Season 6 airs every Wednesday, 10 pm, only on History Channel.
