A viral video showing a lady struggling with a gas pump that is swiftly flowing gas has drawn criticism for the TikToker who uploaded it. The video was shared on February 16 by @big beardd, a TikToker who routinely publishes inspirational stuff. The video has around 150,000 likes and has been seen over 5.5 million times. The woman in the TikTok video looks extremely concerned, shouting and seeking around for assistance. @big_beardd wrote in the video's overlay text, “somebody better save her but it ain’t gonna be me.”

Some people believed the TikToker's decision to record the woman without assisting her was inhumane. One user remarked, “Why wouldn’t you at least try to help her. This makes me so sad. She looks embarrassed & helpless, but at least you got likes on social media, right?” “Is helping each other a dying art?” another user enquired. Someone added, “If someone points a camera at me while that’s happening, I know where I’m gonna point the hose.” Another user remarked, before adding that the TikToker's actions would impact his karma, “I will never understand why people can’t jump in and help someone in a bad situation instead of video and making fun of someone.” There has been also some debate on the internet about prosecuting gas stations because the automatic shutdown feature on a gas pump failed.

@big_beardd later responded to a remark that stated he should have assisted the woman, that the video was ‘a joke.’ Other readers expressed their displeasure with the high cost of all that petrol. Gas costs are said to be at an all-time high and rising, owing in part to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Outside of geopolitics, growing demand, OPEC's reluctance, and other factors are driving up petrol prices.

A TikTok user commented, “She is never gonna financially recover from this.” “Gas is TOXIC,” another user joked. “The gas station would probably not charge her since the proprietors would be more concerned about a lawsuit”, according to yet another TikTok user.

Meanwhile, regarding the gas price increase, Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis at price tracker GasBuddy, said in a statement, “this is a milestone that was hard to imagine happening so quickly, but with bipartisan support of severe sanctions on Russia, is not exactly surprising – it is the cost of choking off Russia from energy revenue. As Russia’s war on Ukraine continues to evolve and we head into a season where gas prices typically increase, Americans should prepare to pay more for gas than they ever have before. Shopping and paying smart at the pump will be critical well into summer.”
