‘Top Gun’ is benefiting from us taking our shot’

Speaking to Vulture, Greenstein stated, “When we first started releasing movies last October, there were really no other big movies. Everyone had pushed their big movies to this year, to this summer. We took a big gamble putting ‘Venom’ in theaters” adding, “Then we doubled down with ‘Ghostbusters.’ Then our biggest bet was when every other tentpole had fled, we tripled down with ‘Spider-Man’-our biggest, most important piece of IP.”

Panitch and Greenstein then hinted that the change in the release date of ‘Venom 2’ might be the reason why ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ blasted off in theaters. “There’s so much press about ‘Top Gun’ right now. It’s like, ‘The movie business is back”, said Panitch adding, “In a weird way, I would say ‘Top Gun’ is benefiting from us taking our shot. ‘Venom’ is the start of that story that allows ‘Top Gun’ to do the kind of business it did. These things don’t happen overnight. It’s a seeding.” For the unversed, Sony Pictures’ next few releases include ‘Bullet Train’, ‘Deadpool 2’ and a sequel to ‘Atomic Blonde’.

‘It was ‘Shang Chi’ that REALLY brought it back’

The new remarks from Sony’s top bosses kickstarted a meme festival. Many also claimed that it was ‘Shang-Chi’s box office success that really paved way for cinema post shutdown. “Lmao. Ur kidding right? literally Venom 2 achieved that level of hype just because of the Spider-Man cameo and the false hope of a good Carnage,” said one fan as another posted, “Didn’t they move up release date of venom 2 after seeing Shang-Chi’s box office success.” One user stated, “Venom 2 wasn’t even the first movie to make decent money during the pandemic, it was godzilla vs kong that really started it if anything, but it was shang chi that REALLY brought it back.”

The next one tweeted, “Don't get me wrong, Venom 2 is a fun movie to watch, but...did he really just say that? If anything, Shang-Chi did it before Venom 2 and kickstarted theaters really coming back to prominence.” Meanwhile, another shared, “Never in my life I would expect Venom 2 and Top Gun Maverick in the same sentence.” One user said, “Sony saying Top Gun Maverick's success is because of Venom 2 might be the most Sony thing I've ever heard” adding a laughing emoticon in the end. Another concluded, “Uh, no. #TopGunMaverick succeeded because it was an amazing with great story, cast, aerial scenery that’s next level with respect to a legacy film whereas Venom 2 was a pg comedy bromance breakup film with a paper thin story passing as a superhero film.”
